I woke up to the hum of an engine that seemed to be coming from outside. I sat up in my bed and rubbed my eyes as I looked around my room. My eyes immediately landed on the window, and I quickly jumped out of bed to see what was going on.
There, on the other side of the street, I could see a big white truck that had been parked in the driveway of my best friend's house. The back of the truck was open, revealing all the cardboard boxes and wrapped furniture inside. I watched as Mrs.Coles walked out the front door with a big box in her hands. She walked over to the truck, where another man wearing a hat and sunglasses took the box from her and put it in the truck. I wiped the drool off my chin with my sleeve as I watched Mrs.Coles walk out a few more times to hand the man more boxes.
On her way back from what seemed to be the last box, a little dark haired boy ran out of the house, crashing into her knees. I immediately recognized the little boy as Adrian. Mrs.Coles crouched down and wrapped her arms around Adrian, who snuggled into the crook of her neck. Why did he look so sad? My bottom lip curled in confusion as I watched Adrian and his mother stay there, hugging. They both pulled away and retreated into the house, Adrian's hand in hers. A few minutes later they both came out wearing a backpack, dragging out even more luggage in their hands. Mrs.Coles took her car keys out of her pocket and fiddled with them for a second before pointing it at her car and unlocking the doors, causing the car to let out a beep and the headlights to blink twice. She opened the trunk and put everything in before shutting it. Adrian just stood still after that, motionless, until Mrs.Coles approached him again and crouched down. She was saying something to him, to which he replied to with a nod. Her head swung towards my house, and Adrian nodded again.
I watched for a while longer, until she opened the car door and pointed for him to go inside. He shook his head and stayed where he was. My eyes darted between Adrian and the truck, and I was finally able to make sense of the situation. If I didn't go down there right now, I wouldn't be able to say goodbye. I hurriedly made my way towards the door, and stumbled down the stairs to the front door, still wearing my pj's.
"Good morning Maya. Maya? Where are you-"
Mom didn't even have a chance to finish what she was saying, before I flung the front door open and ran out on our front lawn. I stood there panting as I watched the truck in horror. It wasn't just any truck. It was a moving truck. Was my best friend was... leaving?
"Maya!" Adrian's small feet patted on the concrete as he ran towards me at full speed. He stopped a foot away from me, his eyes locked with mine as he panted slightly. His messy hair hung in his eyes, where I could see the nearly invisible traces of tears. I already had tears of mine welling up in my eyes at the thought of my best friend leaving.
"Are you really leaving forever, Adrian?" My voice squeaked as the tears finally began to roll down my cheeks. He looked down and shuffled his feet, before looking back up at me, determination in his eyes.
"I have a favour to ask of you." His nostrils flared a little as he spoke, his lips pursed. I quickly nodded, and he took my hand.
"Wait for me." He squeezed my hand. "Wait for me to come back." His eyes sparkled with determination. "When I come back, we can have as many play dates as we want! I'll even let you play with my toys."
I felt my lips curve up in a slight smile. "Really? Will you really come back?" He nodded.
"Of course I will! I'm a man, and men keep their promises." He puffed out his cheeks as he hit his chest with his fist. I giggled and put out my pinkie.
"Then I promise to wait for you." We linked pinkies, making it official. I would wait as long as I had to.
"Adrian! Get back here right now. We have to leave." Mrs.Coles shouted at Adrian from the car window, making her point clearer as she honked at him. Our tears came back in an instant as we stood still, just looking into each other's eyes.
"I have to go now..." He sobbed, his hand still in mine. I pulled him into a tight hug, wrapping my arms around his neck. "Don't forget me, okay?" I whispered to him.
"I won't. You can't forget me either!" His voice quivered. We pulled away, and I watched my best friend wave to me for what could possibly be the last time, before running to his car. He climbed in the back, and the car roared to life along with the truck. Both vehicles slowly pulled out of the driveway. I ran to the curb and watched the vehicles get smaller and smaller as they rode down the street, until they turned the corner and disappeared. My best friend was gone.
