The safe house? Could they be the same one Payton had mentioned?

"I'll come with you, I heard Robin's finally come out of hiding. Can't miss that." A second voice answered him.

No time to find out. I'd have to follow them. I rounded the corner, running into the house without saying a word to Diego. Thankfully, Tania hadn't returned just yet so I was able to get my keys back no problem. I quickly pulled my phone out and dialed Kim's number as I raced back up the stairs, stopping at the top so I wouldn't be seen. After a few rings, it went to voicemail. I tried a few more times, the result being the same. She must've left her phone on silent...

I sent her a quick text about the situation, telling her to call me as soon as she sees the texts. I walked out as casually as I could just as Diego and his friends were leaving.

"Maya, there you are. Did you forget something inside?" Diego turned back, approaching me. I didn't know wether or not I should be slightly more afraid of him. I was quickly reminded of the men in the car that had stopped us on the street all those weeks ago. He didn't seem dangerous, and neither did his friends, but if they found out that I knew about them...

"Yeah, I forgot my keys. Can't go home without em'." I smiled sheepishly at him. "I see you're leaving now, too?" I asked quickly.

"Yeah, did you need a ride?"

"No! No, I'm fine. Kim and Sophia are waiting for me, so I should go now. I'll see you around!" I waved a quick bye and walked around the fence, joining my bike in the nearby bushes. Diego and his friends walked the opposite way, not bothering to look back and see if I had really left. Although who would suspect to be followed by a small teenage girl?

Diego and his friend split up from the group at the end of the street, as both parties went to their cars. Diego got into a dark silver car, while the rest of the group drove away in a black truck. If this 'safe house' of theirs really was at the edge of town, this will be a very long bike ride. I would also have to be careful to not get seen. But then, how would I keep up? This task was beginning to seem impossible from all angles. I guess I'll have to try my best.

I hopped onto my bike and waited for Diego's car to start. Once it had pulled out of the parking spot, I slowly pedalled towards it until it was out of view. At that point, I sped up. The car took what seemed to be a few random turns, almost like they were making sure no one was following them. I managed to keep up thus far, thanks to track and volleyball, as well as the nonexistent hills in this lovely flat town.

I tried to stay further back as they drove along, but pedalling slow enough to stay unnoticed, yet fast enough to keep up proved to be a challenge, as expected. My gracious saviour were the many stop signs that gave my legs a rest. At this pace, I felt like I was going to wake up with body builder legs the next day. This was already too much pedalling for one night.

The anticipation was practically clawing at my skin as we neared the edge of the small town. The consistency of the streetlights diminished, until the only lights visible were the ones from the headlights of Diego's car. It was way easier to stay hidden now that there was no light around us. That being said, did I mention that my legs felt like they were about to fall off?

"How - much - longer?!" I said in between pants as the car began to slowly distance itself from me. I was losing them!

Farm houses were beginning to appear against the backdrop of the night sky, and Diego's car continued forward on the long straight dirt road until it reached the edge of the woods behind the farm houses. It turned left and drove down a bit further, before coming to a full stop. I pedalled half way through the straight road, not taking the turn as I watched them from a distance. It seemed like hours before the headlights finally shut off and Diego and his friend exited the car. I instinctively lowered myself against my bike, even though I knew they probably wouldn't be able to see me.
