Her mother drives me home.
This time, she speaks in English, with a heavy French accent.
"Did you dance with any cute boys?" She asks us.
"Mom!" Her daughter yells, indigently.
"No," I say shyly.
"Adalie saved me," I add.
I can see her mother raise her eyebrows in the mirror.
"Oh really?" She says.
"How did you save you friend, Adalie?"
It might be dark out, but I can still see her face, which is bright red.
"Please tell me you let the boy down easy!" her mother says.
We all laugh.
Some of the boys in our school don't deserve to be let down easy.
But I would never be brave enough for a direct no.
Adalie, on the other hand doesn't take anything from anyone.
Her confidence never falters.
It's kind of amazing.
