The Hospital

I stood in the same position for around five minutes until I finally remembered what I was doing.  I could go to the hospital or look for Hunter, I thought.  But the man was already safely going to the hospital but I didn't what was going on with Hunter.  I had to look for Hunter.  Without thinking I blurted out his name, loudly too.  Fortunately there was a response.  He stumbled out of some bushes and ran towards me.

He looked fine.  He had a few scratches here and there.  His nice clothes had dirt on them, but overall he didn't look all that hurt.

"What happened?"

"Oh nothing much.  Just taking a bus home because I didn't take my car and then all of a sudden a random man pointed a gun at me.  He told me he would shoot me if I didn't give him all my money.  Unfortunately I didn't have any with me.  He pushed me to the ground.  But another guy came charging at him and knocked him over.  I ran away and then heard a gunshot.  I didn't know what happened or if that man who saved me got shot.  I feel like I should have gone back and helped."

"I'm glad you're okay.  That man did get shot.  I don't know where but he was just rushed to the hospital.  I was going to go see if he was okay.  Want to come?"

"It's the least I could do for him."

We walked over to my car and I started driving towards the hospital.

"You know I've never been in a situation like that before.  I felt like a coward just leaving him."

"You're not a coward Hunter.  I'm sure most other people would do the same thing."

He sighed.  I thought about tonight.  It was all too similar to a past experience.  It brought back painful memories thinking about it, so I pushed it to the back of my mind.

"Thanks for looking out for me Cora.  I don't know what I'd be doing right now if you didn't come."

"You would probably be finding your way home.  You didn't need me here but I'm glad I am with you and that I know you're okay."

I found a parking space and we went to the front desk of the hospital.

"Hi we're here to see... I actually don't know his name.  But he just came into the hospital.  He got shot."

She looked through her computer.

"Oh yes him.  Sorry only family is allowed to visit him now.  And my guess is you're not since you don't know his name."

"But I'm the one who found him on the street beat up, I called the ambulance."

"I'm sorry but he is in surgery right now anyways."

"Once he is out of surgery can we see him?"  Said Hunter.

"Only if he wants you to.  We have to have permission from him."

"Okay, we will wait."

"Very well but this could take hours just so you know.

"Yes, I know.  Thank you ma'am."

We walked over to the waiting area and sat down.  The seats were somewhat comfy but I didn't want to be sitting down.

I looked over at Hunters worried face.

"Hey he is going to be fine.  Don't worry Hunter."

"But what if he is not.  What if he dies because of me."

"It is not your fault."

He shook his head, disagreeing with my words.

Just then a family walked into the doors.  There were a lot of people.  The talked to the clerk and they looked worried.  The clerk pointed to us during the conversation.  They walked over and sat by us.

A man who looked about 40 faced me.  "Are you the girl who called the ambulance for Caden."

I nodded.

He walked towards me with a warm smile and gave me a big hug.  Despite not knowing him I couldn't help but hug him back.  "Thank you, young lady.  Thank you so much."

"I just called the ambulance."

"Yes but you gave him a chance to live still.  They said he should be in surgery for the next two hours."

I faced Hunter.  "Well I guess I better tell my parents I won't be home by 9:00."
