You had just spent the most beautiful summer with the most beautiful person and made the beautiful mistake of falling for him. Days that were full of adventure and curiosity and nights that were full of silent giggles and loud passion.

You two had planned your last weekend together with care, trying to avoid calling it your last weekend. There was this gorgeous hike that lead to a waterfall. The hike wasn't hard and you new that it would seclude you from the inevitable goodbye that was soon to come.

You talked easily and laughed the whole time. He grabbed your hand whenever you went downhill because "you're so clumsy, y/n. I'll be your rock."

And he was your rock.

He was your rock for an endless three months.

"I'll be okay," you assured him.

"I know you will be." There was a silence, "but I really liked being your rock." It was suddenly clear that you weren't talking about your clumsiness anymore. You didn't say anything else though.

You wanted to, but then something distracted him. A dog. A big, old golden retriever. He stopped dead in his tracks and went over to go pet it. You giggled as the owners of the animal looked down at your beloved boyfriend with confusion all over their faces.

He stood up, waved goodbye to the dog, and smiled awkwardly at the owners. Your hands interlaced once more.
"Do you think you'll ever get a dog?" You asked.
"Oh, definitely." He proclaimed.
"Won't you be upset when it dies?"
"No matter what happens, the day it dies will always have been the day that it was going to die. That's just life. Things will inevitably end on the day that they end. We don't really have a choice in anything, because the second we make the choice, it was always the choice that we were going to make," he sat down with you on a bench. "So the best thing we can do is appreciate what we have before it ends. So, yes. I will be getting a dog." He finished. But you knew he wasn't just talking about a dog.

Once you got back home, you showered and sat on the couch together. You loved to play the one worded story game. It was so simple and you made each other laugh until the other was in stitches.

"Pigs" you started,
"Eat" he added.
"A"
"Lot"

You both erupted in laughter and decided that that was a good enough story.

You ended the night by watching Disney shorts. You were sitting behind him scratching his back. You leaned forward to hug your arms around his waist and lay your head on his back. Then you felt it. The first tear hit your cheek. You cried silently for a few moments, until he turned around and pulled you on his lap. There you sat with your face buried in his chest crying as he played with your hair.

"You know what would make me happy?" He asked
"What?" You muttered with your head still buried.
"If I knew that you were happy when I go back home." He dried a tear from your face.

He made you smile and held you close for the rest of the night until you decided it was time to go to sleep.

You got into bed and snuggled close until he kissed the top of your head and said goodnight.

His alarm went off.

You woke up to him pulling you close. He was laying on his back and your face was once again in his chest. You stifled your tears so he wouldn't hear them.

It was silent, until you heard a catch in his breath. You shifted upward until you could see his tear stricken face. You pressed him close to your chest and kept promising him that it was going to be okay.

He drove you home. It was a silent drive filled with tears. He squeezed your hand the whole way home.

"It's funny," he said abruptly. "Every time I would come to pick you up it would take me 10 minutes. But when you got in the car for me to take you home it took at least 25." You smiled at your gorgeous boy. Knowing that this would be the last time he was yours.

You both decided against long distance. You had both been hurt before and didn't want to remember each other with anything other than love.

He stood at your doorstep with you and kissed your cheeks over and over

"Goodbye, sweet girl."

This happened a few months ago with my wonderful Jack. When he went back to college. To make me stop crying the night before he left we watched Dan and Phil before we we went to bed.
