"Okay so here's what I found on Alicia.... I just typed her name in on Facebook and found her last name is Rojas.. She's a neurosurgeon at West Hills Hospital and Medical Center in Calabasas. Her husband is Michael Rojas is a cardiothoracic surgeon.. They're the head in their departments.. a power couple basically.. high school sweet hearts.. he must be my dad.. they have a new born baby Lailah.." I said looking up at Jack. He was chewing on his lip and put his phone down.
"okay... so how do we go through with this.. do you wanna research more.. or just confront her.." he asked
"well I have the orphanage name.. I say we head down there" I say.
"what ever you wanna do baby." he says before kissing me up.
---------
The next morning, Jack and I made our way to Saint Mary Rose orphanage. it was honestly the longest flight of my life. we flew from Cali to Nebraska, and Jack let me sleep on his lap the entire time despite the flight attendants refusals. the tickets honestly costed a fortune and I knew he wasn't going to let me pay him back because that was simply the kind of boyfriend he was. I had all of our documents in tow, and I was just honestly beyond nervous.--------
after checking into our hotel and freshening up, Jack and I made our way to the orphanage. it was a nice building. you could tell that they kept up with it. I knocked on the door and a young girl, about 14 opened the door. she was in a school girl uniform, and had thick curly hair and glasses"hi.. I'm here to see.. sister Mary jones" I said as I read the name off the adoption papers. the young girl nodded and let us in. she looked shy and I gave her a sweet smile.
"thanks cutie.. your hairs beautiful by the way. reminds me of mine" I said. she blushes slightly and pushed a curl behind her ear
"thanks.. you can follow me" she replied. We followed her down the hall, and she led us to a door. she knocked and I heard a sweet voice sing from in the room.
"come in!" the young girl let us in, before scurrying away to wherever she had to be.
"hi.. my names Lia.. Lia Johnson.. my parents.. they adopted me from here 19 years ago.. I was about 2 months.. you signed-" I started before she was up and hugged me.
"My little Lia! oh how I remember you.. the tiniest baby we've ever had.. look at you.. all grown up.." she said. tears formed in her eyes and she looked over at Jack.
"who's this young man?" she asked
"oh this is my boyfriend.. Jack.. he's been through this whole journey with me.." I replied. she nodded and gave him a warm smile. her kind eyes seemed insanely familiar to me.
"sit sit!" she said motioning to the seats. we did as we were told and she served us water and muffins before having a seat.
"what brings you hear my love.." she asked. I felt myself begin to choke up and her face softened
"I ... I just want to know where I came from.." I replied.
"I suppose.. I'm not supposed to do this.. but follow me.." she replied. she led us down a hall into a classroom. a woman who was in her early fifties was holding a baby playing with the children. she wasn't a nun by any means. she looked like Alicia honestly.
"Lilliana.." Mary called. the woman looked over, and when she saw me, tears formed in her eyes. she placed the baby in the walked beside her and told her assistant she would return shortly. walking towards us, she kept her eyes on me.
"Lilliana.. this is Lia.. Lia.. this is Lilliana.. your grandmother" she said. I froze. I didn't know what to do, so I reached for Jack's had. he grabbed mine and held onto it, squeezing to reassure me that he was there."
"My little Lia.. is this true?" she asked. she seemed amazed.
"I... my grandmother?" I asked. Mary simply nodded.
"I'll let her explain. follow me.." we followed her into a meeting room and all took seats. I was across from Mary and my grandma, sitting next to Jack.
"Okay.. 19 years ago.. my 14 year old daughter.. Alicia.. had insane pain.. we took her to the ER, and she was in labor.. my little girl was pregnant.. being Puerto Rican, and young she fit into a statistic.. her and Michael.. but my baby girl was smart.. she had aspirations.. but she wanted her baby girl.. she wanted you.. but she knew.. she knew we didn't have the means to.. well support you.. so. we brought you here.. well she did.. I had no idea. she took off, and I saw you when I came in to work Monday morning. I begged her to bring you home.. but she kept saying 'Mami I want better for my baby.. I want my Lia to have everything in life she deserves.. and Mami I can't give her that.' so we let you be adopted by the Johnsons.. it was the most painful day of my life.. seeing my princess be adopted.. but I knew better things were coming for you.." she said. her tears now falling. I realized now mine were too. I was too stunned to reply.. I sat there. shocked letting it all soak in.
"so.. Jack she was my mom.. Jack she is my mom.." I said. at this point, I was choking on my words. I began to shake and I felt a pair of unfamiliar arms embrace me. the scent of perfume comforted me and I realized it was my grandma.
"Princesa, it was for the best.. look at you.. you have everything and more.. God we've missed you.. your mom cries every single year on your birthday, and so does your father.. we always have a cake and sing happy birthday when it comes...I live with them but am down here for a month to visit.. God you look just like your mother.." she says hugging me tight. I just let her. I shook softly as she held me but knew I couldn't fully break. not until I had the closure I needed..
"abuela's got you Mami.."
"okay.. I need to talk to Alicia.. that's all I need." Lilliana smiled.
"I know you're my grand daughter. We'll fly back first thing tomorrow if that's okay." I simply nodded
--------
after spending the day with Lilliana, I felt a piece of me was there that wasn't before. we returned to our hotel and I shut the door and Jack hugged me. he just held me"I've been wanting to do this all day.." he says. I hugged him tight and breathed his scent in.
"Jack... I've found my birth parents.." I said. now the Johnsons are my FAMILY. but the Rojas, are my biological family. it was going to be strange balancing it all.
"insane right.. and you did it.. you figured it all out.. God I love you so much Lia.. you're beyond intelligent and strong willed.. you take every obstacle and conquer it.." he says kissing me over and over again. I smiled slightly and kissed him back, before getting ready for bed.
