Chapter 1

“Hello, my name is Emily and I’ll be your server for this afternoon, what can I get you?” I asked kindly to the elderly people. They smiled up at me before speaking.

“Can we get a cup of your world’s famous coffee?” She asked. I smiled at her and shook my head.

“You sure can.” I laughed a little as I wrote down two cups of coffee in my little notebook. Our coffee here at ‘Adams Coffee Shop’ was world famous, but if our coffee is so world famous, why are we going out of business?

“I’ll be right back” I said, smiling at the two before walking in the back. I hummed myself a little song as I started to pour the coffee in the mugs.

“Emily, are you going to that party tonight?” Mason asked me from the front cash register.

“Nah, I don’t really want to, besides, I have to work.” He stuck his tongue out at me before helping the new customers that just walked in. Our shop was rarely busy so we had a lot of time to talk; everyone who worked together was really close. I would go to work on the weekends or after school, and I would always work with Mason, he was like a best friend.

I grabbed the two cups of coffee and started to walk back to the elderly couple at the booth. When I saw them, they were holding hands and smiling at each other my heart felt like melting; it was so cute.

“Here you go” I said happily as I put the cups of coffee in front of them. I heard the little bells on the front door ring more fiercely than normal. I turned around and saw the owners’ son walk in, he was going into the back with a hand full of papers. I dismissed myself nicely to the couple and walked in the back area to see everyone huddled in a circle. I stood by Mason and the other three workers who were working this evening.

“I have some bad news” He started. I saw a few girls tense where they were standing. I knew this day was going to come where they had to cut a few people due to the cost, I didn’t think everything was going to happen so fast.

“Alyssa and Ava,  I’m sorry but my dad has to let you two go this evening. He will give you a call sometime tomorrow and explain further more but as of right now, you need to turn in your apron and name tag.” I sighed and looked at the floor. I wish we weren’t going out of business.

“Emily.” My head snapped up and looked Adam in the eyes. The owner named this place after him so he would have a place to go with his friends, hence the name ‘Adams Coffee Shop’.

“I would like to speak to you outside for a moment.” My heart rate began to speed up and my hands felt all clammy. I sent a worried gaze towards Mason but he just gave me a short smile.

Adam led the way out side the shop as I followed him closely.

Once the door closed he sighed and looked at me.

“My dad wants to promote you to manager, but that means more hours and he doesn’t know if he can work a schedule around yours so he needs to know when you are available.” I shook my head and instantly relaxed.

“I’ll get him something by tomorrow.” I said, reassuringly. It shouldn’t be that hard, I was homeschooled anyways.

“You will probably get the chance to work with me more often now, so… stay out of my way.” He turned around and walked away. We never did get along, ever. I walked back in the café and stood behind the counter and explained to Mason what happened. We were really hard workers so I couldn’t picture us getting fired; people came to this store just to see our faces.

It was getting late now and it was only me and Haley working. There was never anyone who came in past seven PM but we were always open until nine. It was really dark out tonight and it was storming outside. Haley and I were playing 'go fish' in the back when we heard the familiar sounds of bells on the top of the front door which indicated that we had a customer.

“I’ll get it.” I told Haley as I stood up. I walked around the corner and saw a man standing there, wearing all black and a hat that covered his face.

“Hello sir, my name is Emily, what can I get you?” I asked, politely.

“Emily, such a pretty name.” He whispered kind of faintly. I was freaked out and thought about telling Haley to come up front, but I didn’t want her to freak out either.

“Thank you, would you like to try one of our new scones or how about a cup of coffee?” I asked.

“Emily, would you do me a kind favor?” The man asked.

“Is anyone else here with you right now?” I shook my head no. He was holding up an empty brown bag that potatoes should be in. I took a step back as he brought a gun out of it.

“Listen to everything I say and I won’t need to use this alright?” I shook my head and could feel my knees weaken. Why now?

“Open the cash register and give me all the money that’s in there” I nodded my head and tried to open the register. I saw my phone light up underneath the counter, meaning I had a new text message; thank goodness it was on silent.

“Don’t freak out, I just need to get the key, alright?” I asked as he shook his head. I brought my hands under the counter and opened my phone. It was from an unknown number. ‘Don’t freak.’ What was that supposed to mean, I risked my life for that?? I grabbed a key next to my phone and inserted it into the register. With a flick of my wrist the register dinged and opened.

I heard cops coming from down the road and my eyes grew wide. The man looked at me and smacked me.

“You just wait Emily, I know your name.” And with that he ran out the door and down the street.
