Chapter 18
Drip…. Drip…. Drip….
I was sitting at the kitchen table with Detective Briggs and my parents. I had just woken up and been ambushed for this very important meeting. The sink faucet was dripping loudly as no one yet said a word. It was actually sunny outside for once, making the birds chirping even more apparent than normal.
“So, can I go change for work or do I have to sit here all day?” I asked, not looking up to see their faces. My dad cleared his throat and was the first to talk.
“Emily, we need to talk about this… why didn’t you tell us about this harassment?” He asked. I could clearly sense the hurt in his voice, making me feel instantly bad for not speaking about this sooner.
“I don’t know, I thought I could handle it.” I said, looking up into his piercing green eyes. He was aging a lot more, probably from all the fighting with my mom.
“Sweetie, you could have told us, we would have been there for you.” My mother said, grabbing my hand that was placed in front of me on the oak table.
“I know.” I mumbled, looking back down. I felt ashamed; maybe if I would have told them sooner, they wouldn’t have started fighting in the first place. I have to keep telling myself it’s not my fault.
“I talked to your parents for quite awhile last night. We made a plan that they found comfortable enough to let you do; it’s just up to you, Emily.” Briggs said, watching me closely. I nodded my head and leaned back into the wooden chair I was sitting in. A couple houses down someone started mowing their law, the humming sound met my ears.
“Adam told me about the day he brought you to the park… we want you to go back there.” He said, slowly making sure I got every word he said. Was he crazy? I couldn’t go back there after what happened last time! I started to shake my head but he continued.
“Adam will be right next to you the whole time!” He said, a little loudly.
“It’s just after a while when we know for a fact he’s watching you, Adam will ‘Walk to his car’ to get you something… and when he comes out in the open, we will get him. I know I don’t really make sense, but you have to trust us.” He said, looking deep into my eyes.
“It’s the only way we can make sure he can’t find you anymore…” He whispered. I found myself nodding my head yes before talking.
“When are we going to do this?” He smiled up at me warmly and stood up.
“We are going to do it after you’re off work… today.” He held out his hand for me to take and I did.
“Now, it’s time for you to go to work. Also, you can’t mention this at all today, we don’t know if he has the café hot wired or anything and we don’t want to take our chances.” I nodded my head as I understood.
“I’ll drive you to work, it would be faster and besides, you’re late already.” He said, jokingly. I walked over to my mom and gave her a hug.
“I love you, mom.” I said into her ear. I then walked over to my dad and did the same thing. “Thank you, dad, for everything.” I said before turning around and walking to Brigg’s car.
“You know, Adam knows exactly what to do… it was his plan.” He said, starting the car and putting it in gear. ACDC played in the background on low, filling the air with useless singing.
“Now the plan is not to let you know the plan, it’s best if you don’t know what to expect.” He said, turning down the road and towards the café.
