Chapter 9

I woke up on time this morning. I was surprised myself. I grabbed some light jeans and a red shirt. I did my make up minimal again adding a touch of eye liner and undoing my braids leaving my hair really wavy.

I got back into my room and found a little box on my vanity wrapped in red wrapping paper. It said ‘Sweetheart’ on it in black lettering. I smiled and opened it, remembering he came over last night. I know I should be freaked out and all, but I feel like I know him. I opened it slowly to find a rose inside the box and a little note.

I remember the first time I saw you, walking down Main Street with your long hair and your white tee shirt. You looked so tough. You made my heart pump

A smile instantly grew on my face. I wanted to wear this today. I ran to the bathroom after I checked the clock and noticed I had five minutes before Adam got here. I found a hair clip and clipped the rose securely behind my ear. I heard the honking of a car down stairs so I ran down and got into his car.

“Hey” I said, getting in and closing the door behind me. Adam                                                                                           was looking at me with a grin on his face.

“What?” I asked, feeling self conscious.

“I see you have a secret admirer.” He was still smiling and I found that weird. Does he know something I don’t? Maybe he is just having one of his days. I decided to ignore him, I think that would be best.

“Hi, I’m Emily, what can I get you?” I asked the young man with brown curly short hair and piercing green eyes.

“I’m Dexter; I’d like a cup of coffee and a piece of marble pound cake?” He asked. I looked at him and smiled.

“Of course, I’ll be right back.” I said, putting my note pad in my apron pocket and heading into the back. Adam never showed up this morning so I had to wake up my dad and tell him to drive me to work. I’m not supposed to be the only one working today, kind of weird.

While I was in the back I grabbed the customers things and put them on a dark brown tray. Once I was finished I walked back out front and set the tray in front of him.

“Here you go!” I said, happily smiling at him. I started to walk behind the counter and started to hum again. The bells went off and in ran Adam.

“Sorry I’m late and I didn’t pick you up, I… slept in.” He said, out of breath.

“Where’s your car?” I said, looking behind him and noticing it wasn’t there.

“It ran out of gas last night once I got home.” I shook my head.

“Well, that sucks.” I said, laughing at him.

“Shut up.” He said, smiling.

“If someone didn’t make me drive them home everyday and pick them up every morning maybe I’d have enough gas!” He said, playfully.

“My dad’s bringing me his car for the night so I’ll be able to bring you home still.” I rolled my eyes and went into the front.

The bells rang as a cute family walked in. Adam was beside me, watching them with sad eyes.

“I’m Emily, what can I get you today?” I asked with a big smile on my face.
