Chapter 7

I heard the soft ticking nearby, it was so loud. I groaned and opened my eyes. What was making that awful sound? I noticed I was in the café lying down on some blankets. How did I get here? Haley must have been too scared to bring me home last night. I silently thanked her. I looked at the clock and it read 7:45 AM. I have fifteen minutes before work starts. I had to call my parents and let them know why I never came home. I pulled my phone out and sent a text message saying I fell asleep at Haley’s house, hopefully she would buy it.

I walked into the small bathroom and washed my face off with cold water. I found a hair-tie that I left here last night and put it up in a messy bun. I put on my work clothes from yesterday and folded up the dress that I woke up in.

I went to clock in when Adam walked in. once he noticed me he stopped dead in his tracks.

“I had Haley drop me off early; I wanted to clean up a bit…” I lied, playing with my fingers. I looked up at him, he looked utterly confused. Haley came in right after him, looking at me with relief.

“Oh, good… you’re here.” She said, letting a bunch of air out.

“Thanks for bringing me here last night, my parents would have freaked if they saw me last night.” She looked at me confused. I saw Adam relax almost instantly and walk past me to clock in without saying a word.

“What are you talking about? You disappeared!” She shouted.

“You had me worried all night! I couldn’t even find Dave so I figured he gave you a ride!”

“Dave was there?” I asked, confused.

“You were completely wasted, huh?” I shook my head. I guess so.

“Maybe, you walked here.” Adam said, looking down at the counter as he started to clean it.

“Maybe, but I don’t think so.” Haley left shortly after; she just wanted to make sure I didn’t get murdered. The bells rang on the front door making me look in the direction.

“Hello, my name is Emily, what can I get you?” I asked, getting into work mode.

“Yea, I’ll take a scone and two cups of coffee to go please.” I wrote that down and he handed me his money. A few minutes later Adam came back out with his order and the man left without another word.

“Do you have a hangover?” Adam asked, holding out a bottle of pain relievers. I shook my head yes and took a couple swallowing them down with some water.

We eventually had a line of people that we weren’t expecting so it got a little crazy. I ran into the back to grab someone their apple latte when I bumped into Adam and he dropped the two cups of coffee he made.

“Emily, watch where you’re going!” He yelled at me. I opened my mouth to say sorry before he kept talking.

“I told you to stay out front and to stay out of my way!” He shouted, causing me to wince from the loudness and my hangover.

“Sorry” I mumbled grabbing the latte and heading back out front. Eventually the line died down and we got back to our normal slow work pace.

It was nearing around seven, the time I get off when Dave came in. Adam didn’t stay in the back like he normally would; he stayed right behind me and watched me and him talk.

“Where did you go last night?” He asked, smirking a little bit.

“Why, are you stalking her now?” Adam hissed. I turned around to look at him confused.
