The 104th squad had just completed the basic recruitment camp and had finally enlisted as official members of the Regiment Scout. Mikasa, Sasha, and Yuki shared one room to themselves, while Armin, Eren, and Jean shared the adjacent room. Their entire squad was scheduled for 3DMG practice in the nearby forest, but they had to get their gear from the arsenal first.
"It's our first practice as official Scouts!" Sasha was chirping, and Yuki nodded distractedly, her eyes immediately going to the wall that was filled from top to bottom with every make and model of 3DMG currently available to cadets-in-training. There were a few extra displays set around the floor of the arsenal, and on the far side opposite the entry doors was a long counter that was completely vacant minus a single gear set. Set into the wall behind the counter itself was an inconspicuous door that was propped open slightly.
Jean wandered over to the lone 3DMG on the counter and prodded it, flipping it over in his hands. "Huh. This one must be a special make or something. That settles it! I want to try this one out!" His eyes flicked towards Eren, who couldn't seem to care less about his minuscule show of superiority. "Hmm. I wonder what this does..." Jean murmured, going to release a button.
Just then, a boy not much older than them pushed through the nondescript back door and put his hand over Jean's, preventing him from pushing any buttons. "Stop!"
Jean looked down at their hands, one laid on top of the other. "What, you a homo?" he asked, slightly taken aback by the boy's abrupt entrance and trying to cover it up with his usual snide humor that nobody (With the exception of himself, of course) found amusing.
Yuki mentally face-palmed as Jean merely snickered.
The boy glared at Jean, not appearing ruffled in the least. "Just trying to save your life, for what it's worth."
Jean glared back at him, suspicion in his eyes. "What do you mean, freak?"
The boy removed the 3DMG from Jean's hands and nodded curtly towards the larger display. "Stick to the stuff on the wall and you'll come out in one piece. Probably."
Eren snickered at Jean's mistake. "Well done, Horseface!"
Jean, flushing slightly, thrust his palm into the older boy's chest, stopping him. "Hey, what's wrong with that one?" he demanded.
The boy glared at him. "A valve is stuck, which creates a higher pressure in the cartridge."
"Say what?" Jean asked, already confused.
The boy masked his irritated behind a blank face. "If you tried to release the catch, it's likely that it would have triggered a small explosion."
Jean scoffed. "I won't die from a small explosion that may or may not occur."
The boy cocked his head to the side as though considering Jean's words. "Maybe so, but if you're using it in combat and your equipment fails, that's game over. You die." He shook his head. "Now just pick out something on the wall and leave." He dropped the conversation at that as he carted the faulty 3DMG into the back room, letting the door swing closed behind him.
