After a week, Hiiro was showing no signs of improvement. He did nothing without being asked to, and even then, Levi had to assist him in almost everything. Levi bathed him, dressed him, and tucked him into bed.
Ayato showed up every morning with news for Levi, but after a week, Levi wasn't satisfied with just sitting there.
"He can't go back. Not yet," Levi said, clenching his jaw. He had felt very angry lately. Pretty much all the time. Except he had to be careful around Hiiro because he didn't want Hiiro thinking Levi was angry at him. If he was thinking anything at all.
Levi pushed his hair up, annoyed. "You're babysitting today. I'm going to go kick some faces in."
"But-"
"Don't touch him. If absolutely necessary, you can touch his clothes. Not his skin. If he starts screaming, just have him lie down and tuck him in. He won't tell you if he's hungry, so make sure you feed him at 12. If he wants to hold the fork or whatever, let him. But not the knife, okay? And give him a bath in the afternoon. Go in there with him because if you don't, he might drown. And be ready because he might splash. Or you might have to pull him out or something."
"I thought I'm not supposed to touch him?" Ayato asked uncertainly.
Levi glared at him. "If he's going to die, then please don't let him."
"Right." Ayato frowned. "So when you said babysitting, this is more like suicide watch, right?"
Levi scowled. "Don't say that. Now come in."
Ayato followed Levi in, and Levi walked over to the bed, lightly touching Hiiro's hand. "I have something to do. Ayato is going to be taking care of you today. Be good."
Then Levi patted his head and left. Ayato locked the door after him.
"So...how are you doing?" Ayato asked, wincing at how loud his voice sounded in the empty room.
Hiiro didn't respond.
"Riiiight..."

Levi stared at Yuki's father. Well, glared is more accurate. No need to pretend to not be angry when he wasn't with Hiiro.
"Give me the rotation list for the prisoner cells for the last month."
Yuki's father smiled. "Levi. So nice of you to drop by."
"I'm not feeling particularly nice. Or patient. So hand over the damn list."
"Levi, I do believe you're missing something here. I released your associate as part of a deal. That doesn't mean he's not a criminal."
"We all know he's just Erwin's scapegoat. Hand over the names."
"Or what?" Yuki's father leaned across the desk. "If Takada had been a real felon, what my men did would have been perfectly justified. You would have been happy, even."
Levi scowled. "But he wasn't, and they weren't, and the longer you withhold that list, the worse it's going to be for them."
After a moment, Yuki's father handed over a piece of paper that had been sitting on his desk. His smug smile made Levi want to cut his whole face off. Then his comment increased his rage. "I expected you sooner, Captain."
Levi forced himself to take the list from Aachen, not bothering to look at the names. "Do you habitually sell out your own men?"
Yuki's father shrugged. "I have plenty. You want a few to play with? Take them. I've always got more. And besides, this is Captain Levi asking. How could I refuse?" His smile faded to a serious expression. "I'll be expecting a favor from you in the future."
Levi just turned. "Don't hold your breath. Or better yet, hold it and don't take another one." He left.
Yuki's father just smiled. "So preciously predictable."

Levi came home late that afternoon, patches of blood on his jacket, his knuckles ripped up.
Ayato looked up, relieved. "Finally." He looked over at Hiiro apologetically. "He hasn't said a word this whole time." Then he looked back at Levi and took his appearance in. "What happened to you?"
Levi just went over to Hiiro and knelt beside him, putting his hand over Hiiro's. "You don't have to be scared anymore. The guys who did this to you aren't here anymore. They can't touch you ever again."
Hiiro tensed up before nodding slightly and lifting his head. "Thank you" he mouthed, as though he were unsure of how to form the syllables.
Levi just nodded, standing up and taking Ayato outside.
"What happened?" Ayato repeated.
"I found the bastards who did this to Hiiro."
"And you beat them up? Levi, you could get in serious trou-"
"I killed them."
Ayato stopped, his eyes widening. "How many?" he whispered, his eyes darting to the side.
"Nine. The last one killed himself before I could finish the job."
Ayato stared at him, horrified. "Levi-"
"If you're wondering why I'm back so early, it isn't because I didn't want to make them suffer for every day that Hiiro suffered. But I had to wrap it up so I could dump the bodies before their rotation was scheduled."
Ayato just stared at him, beyond words. "What about prioritizing Hiiro's health over revenge? What happened to that?"
Levi crossed his arms. "Babysitting him got me nowhere. Revenge gets me somewhere."
"How?"
"Because it makes Hiiro safe again."
Ayato was quiet. "If they find out you did it-"
"They know. Aachen gave me the list."
"My father?" Ayato asked, stunned. "Then he'll arrest you-"
"When he handed those men over to me, he knew he was delivering a death sentence. He won't arrest me. He's too entertained. Now he's got leverage on me, and he knows it. Besides. They need me out there. They'd all be dead without me and they know it." He looked at the room. "Now I have to get Hiiro somewhere safe so they don't get to him and use him to yank my strings."
Ayato nodded, troubled. "Do you need passage back to the Scout Regiment?"
Levi hesitated before nodding. "I hate to move him, but we don't have an option. This place is a death trap for him."
Ayato nodded. "I'll make the arrangements for you two and Yuki to go back." He paused before looking down. "Good luck."
"Did you know those men?" Levi asked instead, his voice cold.
Ayato stilled. "I don't know. Maybe. It depends on which ones they were."
"But you have an idea."
He nodded. "I do."
"And? Do you still feel bad about my actions?"
Ayato hesitated. "Well-"
"You spent a day with Hiiro. Do you still feel guilty about those men being murdered by me?" Levi asked, enunciating clearly.
Ayato's pause was shorter. "No."
Levi turned and went back inside.
