Kind of inspired by one of Dodie's songs. Mostly just the title though :) side note Dodie is totally adorable but that's not relevant so on with the Oneshot. It's sad definitely a sad one in parts. Also its a bit of a different style to how I would usually write sooooo yeah
Losing loved ones had always been hard, Simon had lost a lot of people he loved dearly during the 24 years of his life. It never got easier.
The first one he lost was JJ. Olajide Olatunji was a character to say the least. JJ was the polar opposite to everything Simon knew, he was brash, fearless and endlessly passionate. Simon had fell in love with that passion and determination, nothing had fazed JJ, nothing was out of his reach. JJ had taught Simon to take chances, to go where life took him and not to turn down opportunities. Eventually one of JJ's opportunities took him further than he had ever imagined and JJ was gone, pursuing the life and career he had dreamed of. Simon didn't begrudge him that, Simon was grateful for the precious months they had shared and the newfound courage he possessed. Simon just wished he could have said goodbye.
Harry had been next. He was young, energetic and fearless kind of like JJ. But while JJ lived to try new things and explore, Harry had lived for adrenaline. Harry's death had been sudden, Simon had known Harry had a penchant for danger but had never imagined that one day Harry would be bested by it. Harry's funeral was the hardest day of Simon's life.
It took a long time for Simon to get over Harry's death, but eventually Simon began to feel a large part of which was down to Ethan. Ethan was always happy, he always made the best of a bad situation and was always the best he could be. He helped Simon to recover, to feel happy once more but most importantly Ethan taught Simon to look after himself and not feel guilty for putting himself first. Ethan didn't deserve his end, murdered in the street by a stranger with no motive. Ethan's death had been even more sudden than Harry's and harder to deal with.
Tobi was number 4. He was selfless, loving and always there when you needed him. He always knew how to fix things, how to make Simon feel okay. He made Simon feel whole once again. Tobi helped Simon a lot and when they parted ways it was as friends and they made sure to keep in contact.
Simon knew from the very beginning he would lose Vik, and he had a long time to prepare as a result. Vik had cancer, he'd been undergoing treatment for a few months when he met Simon and every doctor he had seen predicted he only had a few more months. Simon had been worried about that but getting to know Vik seemed worth it. Which it was but that didn't stop Vik's ultimate death from hurting Simon.
By the time Simon met Josh most of the hope Simon had held to find 'the one' was lost. he was sick of losing soulmates. Simon had always known everyone had multiple possible soulmates, but he also know you were unlikely to ever find one of them let alone more. Yet here Simon was having met six of them, all Simon could hope was that one day the string of soulmates would end and Simon would finally stop losing them. Josh's story was entirely different to Simon's. Simon was the first soulmate he had ever met, and Josh couldn't have been more excited.
As the days turned to months Simon and Josh's tentative relationship lasted and kept growing stronger. Eventually those months turned to years and the pair grew closer than ever. Simon had remembered all his previous loves had taught him and gave his future the chance it deserved and as he and Josh reached their fifth anniversary he couldn't be more grateful for everything he had been taught.
