Your heart fluttered in your chest as you reached the top of the astronomy tower. Cedric had given you 30 minutes extra, knowing you'd be late. He had expected you to be there at midnight. But set times weren't really your forte. He had his back to you, as he leaned against the railing. "Half an hour extra and you're still late. Punctuality is something you will never be good at, is it?" He turned around to face you, a smile plastered on his handsome features. You rolled your eyes and shook your head.
You sat down, your legs dangling over the edge of the tower. Cedric echoed your actions. He didn't say anything as you sat in a comfortable silence. His armed snaked around your shoulders, making your heart stop, then continue at a much faster rate. You sank into his embrace. It had been a hard day. You felt that you had let your team down and you were now expecting a letter from your father, telling you what a failure you were. He bumped your shoulder with his, trying to get your attention. Trying to make you smile.
You sent him a sideways glance. You wanted, se desperately to give him your full attention, but the loss today was weighing you down. "(Y/N), it's one game. There will be others. Don't let one loss get you down. You were amazing today. That Potter kid just happened to catch the snitch. If he hadn't, you would've won." You shook you head.
"What does it matter anymore? We didn't win. We could've but we didn't. My Dad's going to put me through hell for at least a week. I don't think I'll be able to handle it. I tried. I really did, but it's never good enough, is it? I failed. And now I will never hear the end of it." Tears welled in the corners of your eyes. "God, I'm so pathetic!"
Cedric pulled you closer, his thumb rubbing circles into your arm. Your head fell onto his shoulder, as you cried. "Hey, it's gonna be alright. I'm here for you. You're safe. Matt's safe. You don't have to worry. You're Dad can't hurt you. Not while you're here." Cedric's words comforted you, but you knew it wasn't as simple as that. You'd have to spend the Holidays at home and once again, you weren't sure you could handle that.
"I'm sorry, Ced." You mumbled into his robes. He turned his head to look at you, confused. His eyebrows knitted together in deep concern.
"Why are you apologizing?" You shrugged. Your head was racing with a million different responses, with a million different excuses. But this was Cedric. You didn't have to make up excuses with him. You could be real. You could let the walls down.
"I don't know. I always feel like I'm so alone. Like I'm shut off from the world. It's as if I'm drowning in all of my problems. And to make matters worse I push them all onto you. I'm always bombarding you with my problems and taking all of my anger out on you. I'm an awful friend. We never get to spend time together and every time I see you in public, I pretend like I hate you. That's not fair. I hate myself for pretending. I hate myself for treating you so terribly. The whole damn situation is so unfair." You felt so vulnerable, like you had just revealed the biggest secret you had. Cedric shook his head.
"Don't say that. Don't say you hate yourself. It makes me worry." You leaned into him, more heavily, wanting to absorb all of his comfort. He held you a little tighter, his fingers curling around your arm. "Do you really feel like that (Y/N/N)? Like you're alone?" You averted your eyes. What were you supposed to say? The truth?
"Yes. It feels like I'm faking my way through life. It's feels like it's not real, as if all of it could collapse on top of me. I hate it. It's like I'm sinking." He was quiet for a minute, before he gripped your chin in between his fingers, forcing you to look at him.
"Listen to me and listen very closely. You. Are. Not. Alone. Nor will you ever be. I'll always be here for you (Y/N). You're my best friend and I'd never abandon you. Never." Before you knew what was happening, your lips were colliding with his. He tensed, but kissed you back. His hand moved to your waist. It felt as if a million fireworks were exploding inside your head. Every nerve ending on your body was burning.
He pulled away abruptly. His face was a look of shock and confusion, before it contorted into a deep frown. He stood up without a word and started toward the stairs, running. "I have to go!" He mumbled as he disappeared down the steps.
You sat on the edge of the tower, your mouth agape. Slowly, you shook yourself out of the daze you were in. Did that really just happen? Images of the frown that coated his features flashed through your memory. You rose to your feet, shaking uncontrollably. Tears were falling down your face. You'd just lost your best friend. What have I done?
