Alice slowly released the tall, slender boy from her tight grip, recoiling away from his warmth and kindness. He knelt down so that they were eye to eye, examining her face.
"Its late, go to bed." Alice muttered, looking down at her feet tiredly.
"Practice what you preach." Leo smirked, backing away and sitting on the edge of the bed. Alice looked up at him, and a chill ran down her spine. He was sat there, smiling up at her, pure kindness and contentment written in his features. His hair was a mess and his clothes were wrinkled, but that lopsided grin made a smile creep onto Alice's tired and beaten face.
"Whatever." She muttered, walking towards the bed lazily. She left the bathroom light on, illuminating the room with a soft yellow glow.
Alice crawled onto the bed from the other side, burying herself under the thick, warm covers. Leo slowly slipped under the blankets himself, keeping a safe distance from the small, frail, shivering girl. She rolled onto her side, facing him, a small smile remained on her lips. He sighed, giving her a tired grin as well.
"Happy Halloween." Leo whispered, chucking under his breath. Alice scoffed, rolling her eyes, as her smile grew, revealing her fang like teeth. Leo instinctively ran his thumb along her bottom lip, fascinated by her every detail, before quickly snatching his hand away and apologizing. She simply sighed, blinking at him slowly.
"Happy Halloweenie." She muttered, stifling a yawn. He gave her a bewildered look, truly and honestly realizing how tired she must be.
"You sure you're alright?"
"Peachy." She smiled broadly, closing her eyes and baring her fangs. Then, her smile fell into a scowl. "I hate peaches."
"Why is that?" Leo asked, slightly enjoying the child like Alice.
"They're gross. I dislike most fruits and vegetables, however, cantaloupe holds a special place in my heart. Always has and always will." She said such a silly thing so seriously, and Leo tried his hardest to suppress his laughter. She was small, and strong and scary, on the outside, but on the inside? She was a sweet little kid.
"How old are you again?" Leo scoffed, a small smile played across his tired face.
"You're a comedian now? Gee whiz, let me know when ya get punny." She giggled, nearly bringing herself to tears.
"I think you need to go to sle-"
"No, you need to go to sleep." The giggling girl cut him off, trying to stifle her own squeaks of laughter with her hands.
"Alright, Alice, goodnight." Leo sighed with mild amusement, rolling over so that his back was facing away from her. Alice froze up, staring at the back of his head silently. She would never admit it, but she was cold and scared.
She always was.
Slowly and silently, she scooted closer to him. He was warm and strong, and being near him made her feel safe and comfortable.
She rested her forehead on his back, and her arms between her chest and his back. He stiffened, glancing at her from the corner of his eye. He could feel her shaking, so he didn't say anything. He simply rolled over and pulled her against his chest. She sighed, now engulfed in his warmth and protection.
"You're alright. Its all okay now." He muttered, and she buried herself deeper against him, slowly but surely calming down.
Soon enough, the two of them were sleeping soundly, completely unaware of the events about to unfold.
