hyungwon stared at the ceiling as the sounds of the morning drifted around him. the clanking of pans, mild chatter out on the streets, birds singing, and nevertheless the shouting and stomping of the soldiers passing by.
there was a quiet knock at the door.
"come in," the teenager yawned sitting up on the hard mattress.
"hyung, breakfast is ready," hyungwon's younger brother jin, quietly spoke peeking his head through the door.
"i'll be out in a minute, okay?"
jin left the room and hyungwon sighed and stared into the wardrobe facing him, an array of monotone colours stared back, as if to taunt him with the fact that nothing would ever be lively in the hellhole he called home.
groaning, hyungwon changed swiftly and pulled on some shoes as the floor had been freezing his sock-covered feet. jin was sat at the table his eyes on his food.
hyungwon hated seeing this every morning, his brother would never have a proper childhood because of this shit, because of their father, because of this place. he wanted to give him everything that he knew he couldn't.
hyungwon sat beside him and poked his cheek.
"hyung! i'm not a baby!" he pouted
"sure jinjin," the elder boy ruffled his hair, smiling.
"don't call me that, it's too silly," jin blushed at the childish nick name, "i'm already eight years old."
"aw little baby jinj-" the front door swung open and revealed their somewhat angry father, and, as always, scaring the shit out of jin and hyungwon as he did so.
the boys both stood at attention. it was curtosey, respect, you were supposed to. hyungwon had done it ever since he was a kid. he did it, as much as he hated showing respect to the disgrace of a man he called his father.
"it's okay jin, he's not angry at us." hyungwon lied as he placed a supportive hand on his brother's shoulder as their father stalked farther into their shabby house. their father was always angry at them. he was angry at everyone.
"hyungwon."
"yes dad," hyungwon spoke softly as his father reentered the room not wanting to begin a fight.
"it's sir," his father squinted his voice dripping with authority, "have you been staying away from that boy and his friends? the uh, um, the shin boy."
"yes sir." hyungwon lied trying not to squirm as hearing hoseok's last name made his heart flutter a small bit. hoseok was brave, and a good friend of hyungwon, hyungwon admired him.
"his friends are fags (a/n IM SO SORRY I HATE THAT WORD) i hope you know that hyungwon. you're not just playing your little rebel game when you are with them, you could catch a disgusting disease."
hyungwon bit his tongue, joonheon and changkyun were amazing people who had the courage to be together through all of this bullshit, he admired them just as much he admired hoseok.
he stared at the table as he responded, "yes sir."
"i do not want to see you near them hyungwon."
he continued to stare at the wood lines creasing the table in front of him.
"understood?" his father firmly said in a threatening tone.
"understood."
with that their father slammed the door shaking the pots and pans on the wall as he left.
"hyungwon?"
"yes jin."
"why does he call your friends fags?" jin looked curiously up at his brother.
