I quicken my pace, sprinting full speed through the snow layered forest.

“How much further, Alpha?” my best friend, Beta of the pack, and little sister Safari asks. I stick my nose in the air and inhale.

“We’re almost there! I can smell the others.”

“Right! Keep it up everyone we’re almost there!” Safari yells.

I glance over my shoulder to see that my pack is trailing behind Safari and I. I come to a complete stop, catching my breath. I growl for no apparent reason and announce, “I guess a quick break wouldn’t hurt. Hurry up and catch your breath the meeting place isn’t much further!”

I move aside and make sure that all pack members are accounted for. They all lower their heads as they pass by.

“Is everyone present, Alpha?” Safari questions. I nod. “Yes.” My sister lets out a sigh and returns back to her post. I suppress a low, meaningless growl, “Why must she act like this?” Ever since Mother and Father passed away she treats me less and less like a sister every day. My thoughts begin to wonder as I watch over the pack. I then chuckle at a thought. No matter how she treats me, I’ll always love and protect her, including the pack. I promised myself.

“What is so funny, Alpha?” I turn to the side and see none other than Julia, my parent’s best friend, Delta and the medical career of the pack. I sigh and let out another small laugh.

“Just thinking about how stubborn my sister and I are.” Julia’s high pitched laugh joins my own.

“Awww, yes. I see. Though you and your sister received your Mother’s beauty, both of you gained your Father’s personality.”

I agreed. “Yes, Father was always stubborn. Anything he wanted he got. This gets me wondering how Mother ever put up with him.”

I sighed, holding back my tears, not wanting my pack to see my weakness. Of course, cause Alphas never showed their weaknesses.

“Don’t cry my Child. He and your Mother are proud of you and your sister, I’m sure. You have brought the pack so far, including yourself Valkyia. No matter how much you despise the idea of coming here. The mating season gathering is good for the pack.” She smiled sweetly at me.

“How I’ve dreamed for them to be proud of Safari and I. Thank you, Julia.”

“Your welcome my Child.”

She started to turn around but I stopped her by saying “Your right.”

“About what, Alpha?” There was a long pause before I gave her my answer.

“About how I despise the idea brining the pack and myself here to this mating season. What I believe in stays in my heart forever. No matter how many years ago this certain event occurred. You and I are proof of that.” I explained this with such ease in my voice that it caused Julia to shift. A sudden action that caused me to double check our surroundings. I took a glance at her awhile later.

“Don’t you agree with me?”

“No, my Child, I don’t. I believe that if one finds their mate then they should be able to fall in love whether it’s from the situations we have been through...” I don’t agree with her on this but I wasn’t going to fight with her about it, for I had respect for her and she was a wise wolf. Her also being my parent’s long time friend some how makes me unable to get upset with her. The breeze was blowing in our fur, ruffling Julia’s gray and white mixed coat as my own white hairs were combed from the chilling wind. It came from the east causing the smell of the other packs to appear and something else. A growl rumbled deep within my chest.

“What is it Alpha?” Julia asks, for she knew that I would never growl this way unless there was danger near bye. “I smell an intruder.” I inhaled deeply and took in the scent again…Vampires!

“Round up the pack and continue on the path until you reach the clearing. Tell Safari the situation and send her to me. If she and I aren’t back by the time you get there within fifteen minutes then send for help.”

She bowed her head “Yes, Alpha.” And left. That smell, it was getting closer. I growled again, this time more serious. I crouched down ready for anything.

“Sister, Julia told me the situation. What are they and how many of them are there?” She asked this so rapidly I almost couldn’t understand her.

“They are bloody vampires and I would say there are about four of them. Two for the each of us.” I growled again, my Alpha mode clearly on overdrive. I took a swift glance of her. She was eager I could tell. Normally I wouldn’t have her fighting with me but I needed her and I knew it would make her overjoyed.

“Their close, less than five miles away. Hurry! Take your post and be ready to fight. Remember what Mother and Father taught you.” I crouched down so low into the snow that I was un-seeable, for being born with white fur and silver-gray eyes helps a lot with the camouflage. My sister hide in the snow too, but not as well as I. Compared to me she was born with platinum blond fur and shocking emerald green eyes that could be seen a mile away. “Thank you for bringing me along this time, Valkyia….” I didn’t have time to answer for our guests have made their arrival.
