“Today is the first day of the rest of your life.” ~Anonymous

I awoke to the sight of blinding lights. My eye lids gradually fluttered open, trying to become accustomed to the brilliance. White seemed to be the primary color; the marble flooring, bleached walls, even the paper-like clothing and sheets that laid above my body. After my very swift overview of the room, my eyes landed on the oxygen mask and IVS that were connected to me. ‘What in the world…’ I lifted a hand to remove the unneeded items. Within seconds, two other hands, that weren’t of my own, stopped me in mid-action. My vision brought me to the faces of Safari and Julia. ‘Had they been here the entire time?’ I thought as I slowly let my hand fall to my side. I slightly relaxed when I noticed that their faces held concern yet relief. I gave a small smile to comfort them. Right as I was about to speak, I was interrupted by the beeping hum, which I was unaware of, by those damn human machines! My smile fell as I let out an irritated growl. Julia was the first to respond. Her soprano laugh filled the room and tears of gladness escaped her eyes. To frighten to speak aloud, I spoke to both of them through our link, ‘What’s the matter with her?’ My gaze stayed on Julia as she continued her outburst. My sister must have been shell-shocked for no immediate response from her.

Julia’s laugh dwindled leisurely as she wiped the last of her tears. “Alpha, what delight it brings me to see that you are well.”

A warm smile seemed to find its way to my lips. She returned it with one of her own, as I nodded towards her. Letting my thoughts settle I realized that I haven’t even spoke or gave my sister a hello. Again, before I could even take a glance at my sister there was a knock at the door. A middle aged woman in a lab coat, that seemed to match the rest of the building, came in with a chart. ‘The physician perhaps…?’ She gave a smile towards our direction.

“Well, look who’s conscious! How are you feeling Valkyia?”

‘Is she actually asking me this?’ I was shocked. How was I feeling? I also didn’t know if I could speak without tears streaming down my face which slightly made me feel, pathetic. As I continued a conversation in my world, silence continued in the real world.

I was grateful enough to have Safari cut the silence.

“Miss, I don’t think she can talk.” I finally took a deep breath to reply.

“No. I’m just trying to process everything. And I believe that I’m holding up just fine, Doc.” My voice cracked with every word and my throat felt raw and arid. My sister than broke into hysterical laughs and loud sobs.
