Wes and Vanessa had a lot of catching up to do, and he planned to make up for lost time in the perfect way; he would take her to his house and they would sit around and watch movies and talk about any and everything they could. It sounded perfect, too bad it wasn't.
When the pair arrived to Wes's house, Wes was immediately greeted by a hug from Audrey, who was awaiting his anticipated arrival. She hugged him tight, looking over to Vanessa in confusion.
"What's she doing here?" Audrey questioned, her mind going blank. Weren't Wes and Nessa on bad terms? Why would she be at his house? She detached herself from Wes long enough to look at Vanessa with a look of disgust and jealousy. Vanessa just smiled bitterly.
"Uh, I told you Vanessa is my best friend. You knew that from the first day I met you." He explained carefully, really not understanding why Audrey looked so upset. He couldn't place whether it was anger or sadness, but he guessed both.
"But, she treated you like shit for Dakota Brooks! She doesn't deserve you, Wes! I do." Her voice elevated, and she felt herself getting worked up. She was starting to fall for Wes, and he was just going to drop her for Vanessa? She started to get angry.
"You don't even know me, or Wes for that matter." Vanessa stepped in, and she seemed to be calmer than what she really was. "Your opinion is irrelevant, because Wes and I have been best friends since I could remember, so if you're trying to change that I'd suggest you stop before you get your feelings hurt." She gave her a look that could only ever be translated into words as try me. Wes couldn't say anything, or he didn't want to. He didn't know what words were right to say in a moment like this.
"You're just gonna let her talk to me like that? I thought I meant something to you, Wes! Or were you just using me? I bet you used me for sex, and none of this meant anything to you." She yelled, feeling tears come to her eyes, and Wes frantically searched for the words to say.
"No, that's not it at all." He tried to reason, "Audrey, I really enjoy your company, and you would have made an amazing girlfriend, but that's not what I'm looking for. I needed companionship, and someone to bond with. You gave that to me, but Vanessa will always be my best friend." He said, which ended in a hand across his face.
"You're just like everyone else; I can't believe I was starting to fall for you>" She hurriedly grabbed her stuff and proceeded to leave his house. Wes just looked on in shock, confused and helpless.
"Don't worry Wes, she was just another girl. You could do better." Vanessa reassured him, but he didn't want to hear that right then. He wanted to know why he'd used Audrey in the first place; he didn't think he was using her at first, but looking now it feels as if he were. How could he be such a terrible person? He went up to his room, and so did Vanessa, who was really confused.
"What happened with you and her? Were you guys just acting couple-like and she took it wrong? Is she crazy? 'Cause I can be crazy as well." She said, and Wes just shook his head and put his face into his hands. He was crying.
"Wes, what's wrong? You've never cried over a girl before. Did you love Audrey?" She asked solemnly, the word love falling off of her tongue so tastelessly she could barely say it. He just kept shaking his head.
"No! No, I didn't. That's the worst part. I didn't even love her, and I gave her something I can't get back." Vanessa found it hard to make out what he said, but once she did, she had to do a double take at his words.
"What? You gave her something? Wes, what are you talking about?" She ran her hand through his hair, something she did often when he was upset.
"She took my virginity." He whispered, knowing if he spoke any louder, his voice would break. Vanessa felt as if she'd been hit with a thousand bricks. She knew how important that was to Wes. Although she never knew why, she just knew.
"Wes, no. It's okay. It'll be okay; how did that happen?" She asked quietly, and he started explaining. He told her everything, and when he told her that he did it out of anger, he could feel himself wanting burst into tears; he willed himself not to.
"You're not a bad person," she finally said. "You just made a bad decision, as we all do. It's not your fault baby, I promise. Nobody knows it happened but you and Audrey; I don't think she'll tell anyone." She reasoned, and Wes believed her; he shouldn't have.
The next day, many girls were giving him dirty looks. When Vanessa asked why, they said they were told that Wes uses girls, and that they no longer wanted to be associated with him. That went on for about half of the day, until Vanessa went off on some people, and made them believe other than what Audrey told them. It seemed to make Wes feel better, so she kept doing it. Wes would never purposely use anyone, and she knew that in her heart.
Once the day was just about over, she decided to bring all their friends together and have an afternoon by the lake. They all agreed, and brought food and speakers and drinks. They all got together that evening, and sang songs loudly and terribly, and got slightly drunk. It was all for Wes. At around 11 o' clock, Vanessa stood up, and she laughed lightly because of how intoxicated she was.
"I think we should spend tonight appreciating Wes. He needs to know we won't ever leave him." She slurred, almost falling down after she finished her sentence. Everyone agreed with her, of course, and they all started complimenting Wes and hugging him, and Wes felt the best he did all day.
Soon, they all piled into their cars, and started driving home. Wes and Vanessa rode together, while Sam and both Codys rode in Cody's Jeep.
The whole way home, the pair were so busy looking at one another. Wes was looking into Vanessa's eyes the whole ride, and she couldn't stop staring at his beautiful hair and smile.
I guess that explains why neither of them saw that truck coming.
