*The past

It was a dark lonely night for me, I decided to get some fresh air. I borrowed my friend's car and drove out onto the free road..I thought of my family, the life I was living and where I would end up. I wondered if anyone would ever love me. I was lonely. I pressed the accelerator down a bit and the speedometer read 140. I was going very fast considering the fact that I was in town, but there was no car on the road so there's no harm. I got to a dark road and there was no light but the ones from the headlight, I looked around to see if I could find any source of light to lead the way, what will I do now, I'm in an unfamiliar place and it's dark. I felt the car swerving to the other side of the road so I parked and got down to check. I had a flat tire, Now what do I do? I walked ahead till I saw a tiny bulb with a man sitting underneath it, I heaved a breath of relief and I walked towards him. 'Assalamualikum' I said 'I have a flat tire and I was wondering if there's a mechanic around here that can help?' I asked. He looked up at me then smiled. 'I can help you, where's your car let's go' he said asked he stood up.
We walked back through the dark road and I felt somewhat uncomfortable because he's a stranger...and a man.

'Thank you so much for fixing my tire, but I don't have anything to repay you with here so if you allow me I can come back tomorrow with your payment' I told him. He smiled and said ' Coming back tomorrow won't be necessary. I have something you can help me with now, that's if you agree' 'what is it?' I asked 'Please cook me a meal, I lost my wife and I have no family. And it's been a long time since I ate a home cooked meal' he looked at me with pleading eyes. I couldn't reject him because of the favour he did for me so I agreed.

His house was made of just wood covering a particular area. His kitchen toilet and room were all in the same space. His bed was a collection of different materials put together on the ground to make it soft. And his kitchen consisted of firewood, and each of the necessary utensils. I pitied him.
I got to work after he lit the firewood for me and I made some rice that he could eat for two days.

'I'm done now, you can eat this till tomorrow but try to keep it warm' I said as I put off the fire. 'Thank you very much for your help, may Allah reward you abundantly' I said as I made my way to the door. I didn't quite reach the door when I felt a hand, a very big hand pulling me back. 'What is it' I asked, fear quite evident in my eyes. 'Don't think you can just serve me rice and leave without giving me something else' he said with his fierce eyes staring down on me. 'What else do you want from me? I already told you I don't have anything' I said raising my voice a little. ' you have something I want and I must get it' he said as he dragged me from my neck and pushed me to the floor. It was a horrible sight because he was on top of me, trying frevelently to remove the tightly knotted rope which he tied around his waist as a belt. I screamed my voice out but no one was there to help me. I tried to push him off but he was too heavy. All these agberos sef, they don't gym but they're over excessively muscular. I spared that thought as I laid hopelessly waiting for the deed to be done.
Who am I? I couldn't just lose to him that way, I hissed through gritted teeth and grabbed a firewood that was still red from heat and I used all the strength I had to stab his stomach. I think he didn't feel the pain at first because he just started at the spot I stabbed for a few seconds before letting out an ear bursting shout then he fell to the floor. In no time his bleeding was unstoppable, nothing I would do could save him so I ran as fast as I could...i ran for my dear life.

A three days later I went to that area to see if he was saved but I was met by a group of men carrying a dead body wrapped in white shroud. "Mallam inusa ya koma ga Allah" -Mallam inusa has returned to his creator - I heard someone say..." Wallahi kashe shi akayi"- I swear he was killed. That statement was enough to Make me realise who it was.

I killed him...innalilahi wa inna ilayhir rajiun. I didnt mean to kill him, Allah is my witness. I only tried to defend myself. I only realised I said that out loud when I heard people shouting and some women holding me by my veil.

'A kira yan sanda' - Call the police, someone shouted.

In no time the police got there and bundled me up. I spent five nights and six days in the police cell. I didn't have anyone to help me and my parents would disown me if they heard so I decided to just stay there and starve, maybe die. I would wait there till the date of my trail...I'd already knew my punishment so I didn't sweat it, I was going to be killed soon so why bother?

A bright light was on my face, it was unbearable. I opened my eyes slowly so I could get used to it. I couldn't see what was behind the light so I just stared, at nothing. I heard a soft voice, it was coming from behind the light...

'I know you didn't mean to do it, I'll help you out of here let's go' the voice said. I quickly stood up and went to where the light was coming from. I may want to die but I'm still not tired of living so I might as well just become a fugitive of the law. It's a good thing Nigeria isn't America because I'll be caught in no time...

'May Allah reward you for helping me. You don't know me but you've trusted me. I have no way of thanking you anymore but to make dua for you. Jazakhallahu khairan.' I said after he gave me one thousand naira. That would be enough for me to leave town. I ran as fast as I could to the motor park trying to avoid anyone on the way so I'm not recognised.

...This is a painful part of my past that I've kept hidden for so long, how did he find out?
