You walked to school with your headphones in your ears. You had been listening to Chasing Cars on repeat since yesterday. When you arrived at school you felt a tap on your shoulder so you pulled your earbuds out.
"Morning!" You good friend Mira said enthusiastically.
"Hi. How was your evening?" You said putting on the evenly fake smile.
"Good. How was yours?" She said perching next to you at your locker.
"It was alright" you replied smiling this time genuinely when you thought about the strange boy in the woods. The bell rang and you went to your first class with was Math.
You were decently good at math so when you got your most recent test back to see a 95% you were super excited. Then your friends came over.
"Hey what did you get?" She asked frantically.
"95" you replied proudly.
"Oh that's alright I guess" Mira said unimpressed.
"What did you get?" You asked curiosity getting the better of you.
"Oh I got 98. I beat you again" she bragged then tried to laugh it off. You laughed too just so she wouldn't notice you being crushed.
~when you get home~
"Hi dad I'm home" you called out going to his office to answer his daily questions.
"Y/n have a seat" he said not even looking up from his laptop as you entered. You sat down and patiently waited until he spoke again.
"Any test scores back?" He asked still not looking away from his work.
"Yes a math test and a English test" you replied quietly.
"Scores" he demanded.
"95 and 87" you replied hesitantly waiting for his reaction.
"What did Mira get?" He asked still in monotone protocol as per the usual.
"98 and 87" you replied bracing yourself for the explosion as he looked up from his desk for the first time since you came home.
"Do you ever think y/n? EVER" he started yelling, "You will never get anywhere always being second best. You never hear about second place. WOULD IT KILL YOU TO TRY A LITTLE MORE?"
"I do" you replied quietly.
"YOU DON'T!!! YOU NEVER FUCKING DO ANYTHING" He yelled but this time he stood up. You stood up too, ready to get out the second he dismissed you.
"I DO DAD. I TRY SO HARD" you yelled back standing your ground.
"Are you raising your voice at me young lady?" He asked almost laughing as if it was a strangely audacious thing for me to do.
"I won't sit here and be ripped apart by your words. My average is consistently in the 90s what more could you want?" You said trying to hide your sass.
"Be first place or else we will have to find you a fiancé because you will never be successful on your own two feet" he threatened then added "get out of my sight"
You left and grabbed your school bag. Only to run straight into your mom coming home.
"Did you and your father argue again?" She asked as she watched you grab your shoes.
"Are you going to force me into a marriage?" You asked point blank and her face softened.
"We've been considering it. There are many good arrangements that could be made for the company." She said trying to make it sound appealing.
"I'm going out. I will probably not be back for dinner." You said before dashing out of the house.
How could your mother do this? She was always the one who defended you against your fathers business deals and constant tormenting and discouragement. You put your headphones in your ears and walked to the woods.
You were still listening to Chasing Cars as you did your homework. You wanted the boy to come back. You needed a real friend. Mira was a fake friend. She thrived on your flaws but she was the only reason you'd escaped the bullying in middle school. Your dad only cared about you being first and Mira was definitely naturally smarter then you.
Suddenly your headphones were tugged from your ears.
"Kuroo Tetsurou" he whispered in your ear making you jump forward a little bit.
"Don't scare me like that" you requested before shutting your books and turning towards him.
"You know my name now" he said matter of factly.
"How do I know you aren't lying?" You replied plastering a smug look on your face.
"I know I could lie but I won't ever lie to you" he said before sitting down next to you.
"Why is that?" You asked trying not to blush at how close he was.
"Because I might be falling in love with you" he replied like he hadn't just dropped a huge bomb on you.
"Woah you don't even know me" you replied trying to play it off like you weren't completely blindsided.
"I know more about you then probably your best friend" he smirked. It was even worse because he was right.
"You are my best friend" you replied quietly. That shut him up. His eyes went wide as he starred at you.
"Do you want to come to a volleyball game?" He asked changing the subject.
"Um... I don't really do that much. I'm not allowed to play sports" You said honestly trying to think of how it would go over with your parents.
"Well there is one at Nekoma this week at 6:30 on Friday. If you came that would be great" he said simplistically.
"Okay. I'll try" you replied which was the honest to goodness truth.
"I should probably stop distracting you from your homework. Also good job on that grade" he said before leaving back the way he always does. Then I noticed the 95% sitting there on my books.
"Thanks" I said out loud to no one before finishing my homework.
