CHAPTER 5

I lay awake in my bunk with the curtain closed and the lights off. I couldn’t sleep due to Michael’s loud snores coming from beneath. I grabbed my pillow and attempted to block out the sound long enough for me to close my eyes and hopefully drift back into unconsciousness….no such luck. I reached for my IPod, put my headphones in deciding to listen to some soothing music. My eyelids began to droop and I could feel myself slowly fall back to sleep to the sound of a guitar strumming.

A loud snore brought be back to consciousness. I was wide awake once again. Michael was snoring louder than ever and from the annoyed sighs around me, I could tell I wasn’t the only one awake.

"Charlie!" hissed someone directly across from me. Luke. "Are you awake?"

"Yeah" I whispered back. "Can u get Michael to shut up?"

I heard a soft laugh which made me smile even though I knew he couldn’t see it. I opened the curtain an inch and saw Luke lying in his bed, shirtless with his laptop perched on his leg.

"I doubt I’ll be able to get him to stop. He generally only snores when he’s really tired. Today must have really warn him out." Luke replied but I was barely listening.

The sight of Luke shirtless had grasped my attention completely. My eyes followed from the top of his jawline, past his slightly formed muscles down to his pecks. The rest was covered in the sheet from his bunk. Luke hadn’t noticed me staring as he was placing his laptop to the side and beginning to climb down the step ladder.

"Where are you going?" I asked Luke as he reached the ground in only a pair of grey sweats.

"I’m going to go for a walk outside. It’s nearly 4:30am and I heard we arrived in Melbourne a little earlier. Come with me."

I didn’t hesitate. "Yeah I’ll come with you."

I climbed down from my bunk and Luke helped me from the short drop down to the ground. He made it look effortless but my height prevented me from reaching the ground from the last step.

"Thanks" I muttered to him, feeling my cheeks go red as Luke moved his hands from my lower waist.

"No problem." I was now facing him, his blue eyes looking at me softly, curiously I would say. The tips of his ears were slightly crimson matching his cheeks.

"Is there something on my face?" I asked Luke as I glanced down attempting to hide the smile that was beginning to form. I bit my lip and looked back up with him. His breath hitched.

"Oh no. I just- never mind. Let’s go." He turned his back on me and walked towards the front of the bus. I stood in my place confused and slightly hurt from his blunt reaction. Did I say something wrong to offend him? "Are you coming?" a voice hissed from the front of the bus. I looked back at the boys sleeping figures, making sure they were still asleep and not woken from myself and Luke before I followed behind Luke as he stepped off the bus.

He walked at a fast pace, about a metre in front of me as I struggled to keep up.

"Luke? Can you slow down a bit? My legs aren’t as long as yours!" I called out to the blonde boy. One of his steps was three of mine and he was slowly becoming further in front.

"Oh sorry." He slowed his pace, walking by my side with his hands in his pockets. He hadn’t bother to grab a shirt. Just in my black tee and batman pyjama shorts, I could feel the frosty Melbourne air biting against my skin. He must have been slightly cold. Before I could say anything he interrupted my thoughts. "Sorry about the boys smothering you tonight. They generally become a bit excited around people they just meet especially girls. The opposite of me actually, I prefer to keep to myself until I know a person whereas you can see they can’t seem to keep their mouths shut." He shifted his view towards his feet before I saw him quickly smile at me from the corner of my eye.

"Honestly I didn’t mind. They’re such nice guys." I replied smiling at how genuine Luke was acting towards someone he had only just met. He hummed in response as we came close to the back entrance of the arena. Luke pulled a key from his pocket and opened the back door, holding it chivalrously open for me. "After you."

I smile at him as I walked inside. It was completely dark except for one light at the end of the hallway to the left. Luke began walking in that direction and I followed behind him, glancing at the walls as we strolled. Memorabilia covered the walls marking superstars who had played here. Rod Laver Arena. Luke turned into a room on the right and I followed behind. Inside was racks upon racks of clothing. Ripped Jeans, band shirts, tank tops, it was obviously the boy’s wardrobe. A couch with a television was to the side of the room with a bathroom on the other.

"I uh thought I’d show you where you will get to be for the next couple of nights we perform. The rack to the left is Ashton’s, then mine, Mikey’s and Culm’s. A lot of the things we picked out but management chose some that they thought would match out image."

I walked over to Ashton’s rack and started to look through it. Skinny Jeans, Marvel shirts, tank tops…I stopped looking at a particular item that caught my attention.

"Luke what is this?" I asked holding up a ‘PONIES FOREVER’ tee-shirt. Luke began to laugh and joined me at the rack.

"I can’t really explain it! Ashton thought it was cool so he bought it."

I laughed and put it back. Maybe I might have to alternate some of their styles just a little bit…I heard a sigh and saw Luke take a seat on the couch and begin to channel surf. I ignored the humming from the TV and continued to browse the racks. I was looking at one of Michael’s Iron Maiden shirts when a laugh erupted from behind me. Luke had changed the channel to an episode of Adventure Time. I walked over to the couch and stood behind it as I began to watch. It was an episode I hadn’t seen before. Before I knew it, I was seated next to Luke laughing along with him.

I checked the time on my phone, 5:24am. I muffled a yawn as I lay myself across the couch, my feet just touching Luke’s thigh.

"Tired?" Luke asks turning the television down slightly.

"Just a little. I might close my eyes for a bit." I replied lying my head on the arms rest of the chair, a pillow resting on my stomach.

"Mmmm." Luke muttered. His content laugh was the last thing I heard before I drifted to sleep.
