Elena, are you all right?" asked Elijah, watching as Elena paced back and forth in front of him. Apart from worrying about her well-being, Elijah felt that a rut might start forming in his living room.
"Am I all right?" Elena repeated, her hand flying to her forehead, her fingers combing through her hair manically. "Am I all right?" She seemed to be talking to herself more than she was Elijah. "Well, Elijah, I've been thinking. A lot." Her eyes were slightly bugging out. Whatever she was thinking about, she needed to get it out.
"Elena, if there's something you need to tell me, I'm all ears, but why don't you sit down first?" said Elijah gently. To be perfectly honest, he was a little weirded out by Elena's behavior, but he'd endured worse. He chuckled inwardly as Elena made her way across the room the couch where Elijah sat. She moved swiftly, but hesitantly. It was quite odd, but given her current mental state, Elijah supposed he shouldn't be surprised by anything she did.
"Yesterday," Elena began, "I told Stefan that it was over between us."
"Oh, Elena, I'm sor -"
Elena cut him off. "I don't want your apologies, Elijah. I'm not sad - in fact, I feel free. But anyway, yesterday I also told Damon that nothing could ever happen between us."
Elijah felt something stirring in his stomach. What was it? Butterflies? Why would Elena tell both Stefan and Damon she didn't want to be with them? Elijah had always figured she'd choose one of them, but now the reality that she hadn't chosen either of them was setting in and he wondered what Elena would say next. He hadn't made her blatantly aware of his feelings for her, but he was sure she'd picked up on them somewhat. He'd never divulged his true feelings - that he kept for himself. He wasn't even sure he could put into words what he truly felt for Elena.
"Y-you did?" Elijah asked, his breath catching in his throat. He cleared it and continued. "And why would you do that?"
"Because," Elena said, "I decided I needed to be honest with myself. And in order to be honest with myself, I had to admit that I didn't feel anything for Stefan or Damon anymore. There's only one person I love, Elijah, and it's you."
"Elena," breathed Elijah. The word was nearly silent, but Elijah heard fireworks, cannons boom, and bells ring. From the look in Elena's eyes, Elijah could tell she heard the same. Abandoning pretense and foregoing any and all control he'd had, he seized Elena's back and pulled her to him, pressing his lips to hers. She let out a low moan as she kissed him back. It was the first of many urgent, passionate, beautiful kisses they shared that night. Elena and Elijah both felt as if all was right in the world as they admitted their love for each other.
As they lay on the bed as the sun rose, Elijah turned over to Elena, caressing her cheek and kissing her forehead.
"I've waited so long to hear you say those words, Elena, love. So long."
"I wish I would've said them so much sooner," Elena replied, her eyelids fluttering closed and Elijah ran his fingers through her soft hair.
Elijah kissed her lightly on the lips and they both fell into a dreamless, peaceful sleep.
