Elijah had been through the deaths of many of his loved ones. In fact, his own brother just died about two hours ago, and the hole in his heart still hurt, as if a White Oak stake had been driven through his heart.

Now however, standing before the girl he loved, it felt like White Oak stakes were being driven through every last part of his body. He never guessed that itnwould end like this. Here he was, an Original. An ancient vampire who had been through everything from the Middle Ages, to the Renaissance, to the Industrial Revolution, to the Cold War. He had seen the horrors of the Holocaust, laid eyes on the destruction in Napoleon's wars, been present at the execution of Anne Bolyn and seen many other kinds of heart-stopping, horrific events in the history of this Earth.

But nothing could compare to this, he thought.

Standing over the dead body of Elena Gilbert. This was the worst horror he had ever experienced. He had already witnessed Tatia being sacrificed by Esther to chain Niklaus, and now, her doppleganger had died, and with it, the entire Petrova Bloodline.

He had learned of Elena's death at the hands of Rebekah, and rushed over to the hospital. Stefan was outside, too pained to see her dead corpse, while Damon was driving back from wherever he was supposed to be in.

His hand carelessly dropped to caress her beautiful, oval face. It was that same face of Tatia that had been the object of his desire a thousand years ago. He remembered when he first met Elena, he thought he could use her to get to Niklaus.

It was not to be, however, for over time, Elijah realized that Elena was more than just a doppleganger. She was an entirely different person, who could be rash, like when she killed him at the lakehouse. He couod never imagine Tatia, that sweet innocent girl, try something as dangerous as challenge a thousand year old demon who could snap her neck just be pinching it.

Looking down at her, laying peacefully as if she were only asleep, Elijah realized that it was all over. Tatia was but a ghost of his wretched past, Katerina wasn't worth looking for anymore, and now, his beloved Elena was gone. Killed by a rash decision made by his sister.

Finally, he let the floodgates open.

Tears of sheer, agonizing sorrow flowed down his face. His once calm, composed demeanour decomposed to show the man he really was. He had his hurts, his sorrows, his pains. He let all of it out, weeping over the girl who would never again light up his day with her brilliant smile and sweet voice.

His face buried itself in Elena's hair, which was still wet. He finally knew the words That had escaped him for so long.

"Elena," he croaked," Elena. If you are somewhere up there with God, please hear me. Elena, for the longest time, you were my light. I wasn't sure I deserved to live, amonster like me. But you came into my afterlife and showed me the meaning of living, even if it is a dammned existence. You, who should never have been involved in this business of vampires, deserved to live. I am so sorry for what Rebekah has done. Elena, please just know this."

"I love you."

And with that, the broken Original wiped his tears, tried to regain some form of composure, and walked off to continue in this dark cycle of life as a vampire.
