Chapter 5 - Different

All I could do was smile and nod looking at the two of them in that moment. I felt like that was the only thing I could that wouldn’t make me look like an ass. But it's not like I wasn't happy for them, because I was! It's just; I had always pictured him with someone different.

The Beth I had always known was loud a loud brunette that didn't care what people thought. Which though high school was fine, I just hoped that something changed? Is that wrong?

"So what's been going on here?" she asked as she looked over at me and put on a smile too wide to be real. "Just friends catching up!" I snapped back at her by mistake. I could tell she was a little put off by me at this point, but I really couldn't care less. I mean why should I care?

"Hey gu-" Jack said walking into the room and seeing the situation at hand. Well there really wasn't anything to be seen. "What?" I asked and all eyes landed on me for a second "You sound surprised" I said looking at Jack. Jack shrugged and looked over at Beth and Finn who were both expressionless. "Is no one going to tell me the fu-" and that's when I saw the bottom of my mother’s blue rob start down the stairs.

"What is all the noise about?" she asked rubbing both her eyes before tucking her short brown hair behind her ears. And you know I wanted to know too, but I didn't think dragging my mother into this was in my best interest. "Nothing" I said looking at her and putting a small smile on my face. 

"Look you all need be quite or go home!" she said with her eyes still closed and we all looked at each other. "I think it's best if you all went home" I said and I could see a smile grow on Beth's face but she quickly changed it, I just rolled my eyes. "But I’ll see you tomorrow?" "Definitely" Finn said with a smile but Beth squeezed him tight and it disappeared. What was going on?

"Whatever I’m just tired! Night Mrs. James! Night Holly!" Jack said before yawing and walking towards the door. "Night Jackson!" my mother said walking towards the stairs and going back up to the room. I looked at Beth who was looking at me then at Finn who was starring me down. He looked down at Beth "Can I have a second?" he asked and she nodded.

She walked towards me and stopped "It was really nice seeing you, we should go shopping or something sometime?" she said and I nodded "For sure" I said trying to hide the sarcasm that clouded my voice. Her fake smile faded as I watched her walk out the door. Then I turned back around to find Finn standing right in front of me.

"Holly I’m so so-" "Why are you apologizing?" I said cutting him off and he looked at me confused. "I...I don't know? I just thought..." he said and I looked at the floor shaking my head "No Finn" I said before looking up. His green eyes were locked with mine and the words just kind of jumped out of my mouth. I had not control over my mouth, just like most times.

"Finn we are just friends"

As the words came out of my mouth I wanted to pull them back in, I really did. But they were already said now and I watched as his expression didn't change. He just stood there looking at me and I just wanted to disappear. Then he finally opened his mouth but only to let out a small breath.

"Night Holly" he said in a way that I couldn't read into it. He reached for the door and I wrapped my small hand around his wrist "Finn wait I didn't-" "Night Holly" he said again not even looking at me. So I just nodded as I let go of his wrist and backed away. "Night Finn" I mumbled and he sent a nodded my way before he opened the door and walked out of my house.

I stood there for a second trying to decode what was going on, but couldn't. Everything was just different now between Finn and I and even Beth and I. And to say the least I didn't like it. I didn't like this new different, but I also didn't like what happened in the past.

"Sweetie?" I heard behind me and I turned around to see my dad. "Yea um sorry I'll clean the den before I go to bed" I said and he nodded "But are you okay?" he asked and I thought about for a second before I nodded "Couldn't be happier" I lied. "Alright, good night" he said walking over and placing a kiss on my forehead "Night" I mumbled as I watched him slump his way back up to his room.

A/N: Sorry it's sort! Its finals week and I’m supposed to be studying!
