Four years earlier
I was sitting on my roof with tears running down my face. Nobody was home and it was best this way. My mother always ate this type of stuff up and would only make it worse for me. And the stars are just the most relaxing thing even though the hot and humid summer air made me dress uncomfortable. And now my hair was a frizzy mess by now but I could care less.
"Holly?" I heard behind me and I turned around wiping away my tears to see Finn in my room. "What are you doing out there?" he asked in a panic from inside and I shrugged "It's nice out" I said tuning back around. "Are you crazy come back in here" he said holding his hand out and I shook my head "Don't make me come out there" he warned.
"Finn just go back home alright, I'll be fine" I said with my voice cracking the whole time. I heard him let out a sigh before I heard some shuffling "Oh my god" he said sliding on his bum over to me. "This can't be safe" he said and I shrugged "If I fall oh well" I said wiping away some more tears. Then the only sound was me sniffing and the sound of crickets down below.
"What do you want?" I finally asked and he shrugged "I looked out my window and I saw you on the roof so I had to see what was going on" he said "So what is going on?" he asked. "You know Ben at school right?" I asked looking up at him and he nodded. "He turned me down" I said out loud for the first time and I could feel it burning a hole in my chest.
"I-I'm sorry Holly, want me to kick his ass?" he asked and I actually let out a little laugh "Give him the old one two?" he said holing up his fist. "No Finny" I said leaning over and resting my head on his shoulder and wrapping my arms around his. "You know what makes it worse?" I asked "After that he asked me for Beth's number". Finn pushed me off his shoulder and looked down at me "really?" he asked and I nodded.
"Is he fucking crazy?" Finn said a bit louder "You are beautiful, smart, funny, and all around amazing" Finn said and I smiled "Thanks Finny but I guess she has something I don't" I added. "No, no no, no! She has nothing on you trust me on this one Holly" he said and just nodded so he would shut up about it. "I'll just have to go to prom alone I guess" I said and he pushed me a little "Someone is going to ask you Holly, don't beat yourself up". I looked over at him in the dark "You really think someone is going to ask me?" I asked and he nodded giving me a smile "I'm positive".
"Why do you have to be such a good friend?" I asked resting my head back on his shoulder "Don't ask, just appreciate me" he said and I shoved him away. "You're such a dork" I said and he pushed me back "So are you" he said laughing and I rolled my eyes. "Whatever" I said before I yawned "What time is it?" I asked and he pulled out his phone and looked.
"Half past midnight" he sighed "Finn!" I almost shouted and he looked confused "We have school tomorrow!" I said jumping up and crawling back into my room head first and also falling head first. "Holy hell" Finn said jumping though my window and picking me up "You alright?" he asked and I nodded "Other than the concussion, I'm good" I joked making him laugh.
"Well if you aren’t dead in the morning, see you at school?" he asked "If I don't die, yes" I replied as he finally let go of me and let me stand on my own. "Now go home before your mom kills you" I said watching him walk to the door "Whatever" he said and I shook my head "GO". I said opening my bedroom door for him and he walked up to me "Bye" he said meeting my eye level "Bye Finny" I said with a smile and he smiled back.
