"Hey, babe. How are you?" Luke asked as he closed the front door of the flat behind him. He had just returned home from work, and made his way into the living area, leaning down to peck Tegan on the cheek and reaching over to ruffle Kian's hair, before sitting on the sofa.

"How was work?" she asked him, pausing momentarily from helping her son to build towers with the wooden building blocks that we're set out on the carpeted floor between them.

"Busy," Luke grinned, loosening the knot of his red tie and un-doing the top two buttons of his white shirt. "We're trying to secure another big contract."

Luke worked for a big advertising company downtown. He had recently been given a promotion making him the boss of his department, meaning he had his own office now - instead of the small cubicles that his colleagues still had - and an assistant.

"How's Nina?" Tegan asked, a slight tinge of jealousy in her tone.

"She called me this morning actually, didn't come into work today," Luke reached a hand up to his mouth to conceal a yawn before continuing. "Her boyfriend broke up with her yesterday, she's staying at her friends for a few days to help get over it - poor thing."

"She saw it coming. She put you in her basket a few months ago," Tegan mumbled and Luke couldn't help but chuckle.

"Is that a touch of jealously I can sense?" he teased,  and Tegan tossed a building block lightly in his direction. "Is there any food?"

"We already ate, didn't we?" Tegan turned her attention back to Kian. "Tell Luke what we had."

"Pasta," Kian revealed excitedly, he was going through a phase in which he thought pasta was the best thing since sliced bread.

"What kind of pasta?" Luke asked, leaning forward and resting his elbows on his knees, fuelling the young boys excitment over the simple matter that was pasta.

"Pasta snakes!"

"There's spaghetti in the fridge," Tegan corrected with a smile.

Luke got up with a nod, the same fond smile playing on his lips as on Tegan's, and made a beeline for the fridge. He found it very cute that Tegan was wary of his receptionist, because for the most part of their relationship so far, Luke had been silently insecure - worried that the girl he loved was simply just settling for second best.

"Where is it?" Luke questioned, peering into the fridge.

"In the fridge."

"Where?" Luke frowned. "I don't see it."

"Luke, it's on the second shelf or something," Tegan sighed. "Look properly."

"Come and help a guy out here," Luke chuckled. He could see the bowl of pasta perfectly, he just wanted the chance to surprise his girlfriend with a somewhat romantic gesture.

"Luke, I swear," Tegan groaned, coming up behind him and reaching for the tin foil covered bowl. "Do you want me to hear it up for you while I'm up?"

"Yes, please," Luke requested, pushing himself up to sit on the counter.

"Aren't you going to change?" Tegan questioned as she set the microwave for five minutes and eyed Luke in his formal work clothes.

"Yeah, in a minute," Luke nodded, gesturing first for her to come to him. "Come here a second first."

"What?" Tegan pulled a face, and moved over to Luke and stood between his legs nonetheless.

"Why are you jealous of Nina?" Luke smirked.

"Nina? I'm not jealous of Nina-" Tegan scoffed.

"You don't have anything to worry about, babe."

Luke leaned down to assure Tegan with a short, sweet kiss, and let his finger trace down her cheek as he pulled away again.

"Not with Nina, anyway," Luke smiled cheekily. "Maybe with Stacey from payroll though."

"Luke," Tegan groaned, shoving his chest lightly, and moving over to the cutlery drawer.

"Oh, come on! You know I'm only joking!"

Luke stood in the doorway of the bedroom with his toothbrush in his mouth, watching his girlfriend in pure adoration as she folded the clean laundry away into the correct drawers.

"Why are you looking at me like that?" she asked him, catching his gaze.

"I want to talk to you about something," Luke decided, holding his hand up and gesturing for Tegan to wait a moment. "I'll be right back."

Luke left quickly to finish brushing his teeth, and Tegan was left alone, perched on her side of the bed, wondering if the approaching topic of conversation would indeed resurface the names of his two female colleagues.

From her place on the bed, Tegan could see that Luke had switched the bathroom light off - due to disappearance of the artificial glow from down the hallway - and waited for Luke to re-join her.

"Hey," he said softly, his smile wide as pushed the door closed and moved to meet Tegan on the bed.

He pulled the covers back and allowed her to slip under first, before he followed.

"What is it?" Tegan couldn't help but blurt out. She felt uneasy, which was strange.

Since she had visited Calum in hospital the month before, she had been thinking about him a lot - a lot more than she cared to admit. So with Calum almost constantly on her mind, Tegan was unsure why she was so concerned about Luke's affection.

The more she thought about Calum, the more guilty she felt about using Luke. Of course using him had never been her intention - the last thing she wanted to do was to hurt him. There had been a time where Tegan had thought the world of Luke as her boyfriend, but now, if she was honest, she just wanted him back as her best friend.

Tegan was just so scared of hurting him - and herself, she still loved Luke romantically, but just not enough. And so deep, deep down, Tegan really half-hoped Luke would tell her he'd slept with Nina, or even Stacey.

The relationship that both Luke and Tegan shared really wasn't the same anymore. Luke worked a lot and wasn't around much, and Tegan had Kian to think about and what was best for him. They rarely had sex anymore either - which was rather unfulfilling for them both - and Tegan remembered reading somewhere that once you stop having sex, it just becomes a friendship.

"Is it someone from work?" Tegan asked quietly.

"What?" Luke frowned, confused. "No. No, babe, I thought you knew I was joking."

"Yeah. Yeah, I did," she forced a small smile. "You're just making me nervous."

"If anyone should be nervous it's me!" Luke chuckled.

Tegan let out a slow breath.

"I've been thinking about it for a while now," Luke spoke softly, a small smile on his lips. "About how much I love you, and how lucky I am to have you."

"Oh, come on, Luke," Tegan interrupted, fearing the worst - she didn't like where his soppy sentiment was headed. "Spit it out."

"Okay," he said slowly. "I've been thinking about how much I want to spend the rest of my life with you."

"Luke, don't," Tegan breathed, her voice almost inaudible to him.

"And I'm not saying we need to do it right away, or even that soon," Luke dragged it out, simply because he was so nervous. "But I want you to know that I love you, and one day, I want to marry you."
