Tears were cascading down my face, more already pooling in my eyes ready to help continue the waterfall. I was numb from disbelief. I just couldn't grasp the fact that she wasn't with me. A hand touched my shoulder and I looked up, my tear stained vision not making it clear who it was.
"Let's go, Reid." Derek patted my shoulder, escorting me out to the parking lot. I took in a deep breath sitting down on the curb. Derek sat down beside me patting my back soothingly.
I was down right stupid. If only I hadn't let my arrogance in the way. Maybe she'd be here.
"Leo Douglas, recent drop out of Cleveland State. He had a restraining order put on him by ex girlfriend. According to some social media posts his girlfriend cheated on him with his brother. He caught them in the act of doing the dirty deed." Grace reported with a sour face. "The poor kid's been through so much.""Sexually assaulted as a kid by his father, moved to multiple foster homes, the works. He also has Dyslexia but somehow passed school with flying colours." I confirmed, reading off the file Grace had sent to our phone.
The team was exhausted at this point. We had a lead yesterday night after a witness reported seeing someone in dark clothing threaten a victim with a gun. The victim fit the aproximate parameters for potential victims and within minutes we we're at the scene. That whole ordeal led to a whole car chase nearly, making us drash into an oncoming train. Emily, however managed to snap a picture of the back of the car as it sped off, leaving us in its wake.
It took a while for Grace to analyze the picture and process the pixels, leading us to this morning which leads us to now.
"We saw in his last kills he was definitely devolving, Leo's going to confront his real targets." JJ pointed out already slipping into her FBI bulletproof vest and FBI jacket. The team worked silently as we all hosltered our weapons and pulled on our protective gear.
Grace read aloud the address to us.
"Do you ever have that feeling when a case is going to end wrong?" I asked looking at our most experienced member, David.
The older man offered me a small sad smile. "You never know fate's true intentions until the even plays out." That didn't help.
We ran to the SUV's parked outside waiting for us. I jumped into the driver's seat pulling on my seatbelt. Less than a minute after we sped off towards Leo's brother and fiance's house, Grace called.
"My lovely friends. I bear bad news. Our UnSub is registered to two guns. A glock 47 and a Walther PPQ. Please please be careful my lovelies." Grace requested a worried tone laced into her words.
JJ smiled. "Don't worry about it Grace, everyone will be back home safely soon."
"Alright, just so you guys all know, I've called in the SWAT team." A smile made it's way across my lips.
"Thanks Grace, you're the best." She chuckled nervously. "Bye guys, be safe." Grace warned, disconnecting the call shortly after.
I kept my eyes trained on the road, foot pressed against the gas pedal, attempting to make it there as soon and as safe as possible.
We pulled up, quickly leaving the vehicle. We've all done this numerous times, we had the drill drilled into our heads. Always see if there's an easy opening, be careful and aware if there is any hostages, alway check every nook and cranny, and only shoot if necessary.
I approached the set of stairs leading us down into the basement. The suspect came into view, holding his ex in his arm.
"Leo Douglas drop your weapon and put your hands up." The man before me laughed darkly, pressing the gun harder on to the girl's temple. My eyes flickered down to the floor, Connor, Leo's brother, was on the floor cold and lifeless. He was in a pool of his own blood, multiple bullet holes through his body.
"Can't do that sir. You should know that."
I moved in slower. "Leo, let Samantha go. This isn't right." I pushed a little farther gun still perfectly aimed at his head.
He snickered.
"Leo you want Samantha to be happy right?" Emily asked studying the UnSub with a new found interest. He nodded subtly eyes narrowing slightly at Emily. By now the whole team had formed a circle encasing Douglas.
"She's not happy, can't you tell? If you shoot you'll never get the chance of seeing or hugging her ever again. You don't want that do you, Leo? Do you?"
Leo's brows furrowed, processing whatever Emily just said. I smiled inside glad Emily knew exactly what to say.
"You promise that she'll be absolutely happy if I let her go?"
Emily nodded, lowering her gun. A thought occurred to me, where was the second weapon? Then I realized Leo only placed the loaded gun at Samantha's head, his other arm behind her back. It was in his other hand.
Everything happened in slow motion.
Emily moved closer to the UnSub, sending a comforting reassuring smile towards him. Leo frowned, placing a sloppy kiss on Samantha's head. He pushed her out of the way in a blink of an eye.
"Emily the other gun!"
It was too late, Leo raised his other hand and fired twice. I pressed the trigger, along with the rest of my team. From the corner of my eye, I watched as Adam bent down to check Leo's pulse. He looked up at David and shook his head, he was dead.
I fell to my knees at Emily's side, tears falling out of my eyes. She smiled at me weakly. Blood was profusely pouring out of the two bullet holes to her abdomen. I pressed my hands to the wounds, trying to stop the bleeding.
"Em, Em! Stay with me!" I cried out grasping her hand. I brushed her brown hair away from her face.
"GET A MEDIC!" Emily smiled weakly, studying my face.
She frowned. "You're cute when you're worried." Then her eyes fluttered shut.
Medics rushed forward and whisked her from my arms. "What are her chances?"
One of the paramedics looked up at me. "Not good."
