Chapter 16

As I follow Jo downstairs, my mind is lost in curiosity about his encounter with that thing in the nurse uniform... I wonder if he just wounded her. There has to be more... More entities like her that must be killed.

I understand now. This is how to do it. The questions that still remain are... where to find these assholes, and how to get out once the realm starts to fall apart.

This thought really annoys me.

How, if it's inside of the afterlife, will it fall apart? Where does it all go? Energy doesn't just explode or disappear. It expands. The souls would be released, but what about me, you... or Jo for that matter? We are all still living.

What if we don't return to our bodies. What if I lose mine?

I don't realize until now my breathing is a little rougher and I've been clenching my fists.

I remember standing in front of Raylen - the conversation we had about the realm.

"...How will I destroy the realm?" I asked.

"That, is something you will have to find out for yourself. I cannot enter the realm. He will kill me. ...Remember this Gabriel - once you're in, you're in - he will find you and the realm itself may try to change you. He will find a way to destroy your conscience and use you for entertainment."

"He's already done some of that already. I know the difference between what's real and what isn't. ...No. I will destroy him. Not for you, not for Jack - this is for me, and Addison."

I crack my neck at the memory.

What's real, and what isn't. He wasn't lying about that.

Do I seriously believe I can trust this man in front of me?

I've had to convince myself. Just for you.

What will destroy the realm? The nurse is the first thing I need to eliminate. Truly like a puzzle, after one section is complete, more questions and answers lie ahead.

"Are you going to keep daydreaming?" My thoughts are interrupted by Jo grabbing the knob of the door to the forth floor.

I only glower at him.

He blinks at me and then says, "What? Do you want to go down some more, Mr. Control Freak? I have a feeling that nurse should be close, too. You have to destroy the demon piece by piece before you can have the slightest chance to save the girl."

I think about what he says, looking from his annoyed, yet cowardly face to his hand eagerly waiting to twist that knob.

"What are you doing?" He exasperatedly asks.

I gradually grin... the most darkly sweet of grins. "Are you stupid, or are you playing with me?"

Jo...

His expression begins to change. He's anxious and sheepish now.

As I walk slowly toward him, I invade his mind once again, and the look of horror spreading over his face only means one thing now - I can see he's hiding something.

I back him into the corner and see the same memory I saw when he stabbed the nurse. I search for more memories, and ideas, but as soon as I see a small glimpse of anything, it goes static. A blank spot.

Hiding.

I have never seen anyone with that sort of control. This is very strange. Suspicious.
