The countless seconds had turned into hours as the giant clock hanging on the wall ticked over to eleven o'clock. I hadn't moved an inch, I just sat there and stared blankly out the window. My mind was spinning uncontrollably, however I wasn't thinking of anything in particular.
Anna hadn't moved from her spot beside me, her arms wrapped around my shoulders, head resting on mine, and a few loose strands of her brown hair were dangling in front of my face. The silence had consumed us, our thoughts taking us elsewhere as the sky outside changed from dark to darker, the moon has risen to its peak, and the occasion clouds had vanished as the many stars appeared in the sky.
Everything was looking quite lifeless if you ask me. But I'm probably being pessimistic.
The soft knocking on my front door caused us to both turn our heads around, and simultaneously peer down the hallway. Anna lifted herself of the couch and with wobbly legs, made her way to the door. From where I sat I could hear the door opening and the soft click as it closed, and the sound of footsteps coming back into the living room. I wondered if it was a police officer or a foster carer or something like that. I knew it wouldn't be anyone from my family, as they all stayed in Australia when we moved here when I was four.
I found out soon enough, as Anna came back with a lady beside her. No idea who she was, but she was gorgeous, looking to be in her mid-forties. The only tell-tale thing about her features were that her eyes were red and blotchy, and her her hair seemed quite out of place. Still, when you compared her to me, I probably looked like a lost cause. Who am I kidding? I am a lost cause.
She waited in front of the couch, a gloomy look on her face, as Anna walked up to me and wrapped me in a hug which I tentatively returned. Pulling away, but still resting her hands on my shoulders, she whispered "We'll talk soon, I promise."
I gave her one last smile. "Okay, hopefully I'll know what's going on soon. And thank you." Looking down, she let her hands fall of my shoulders and quietly said "Love you" before turning around and walking towards the door, letting it shut softly behind her. I watched her drive away, before I looked away.
My gaze turned to the lady in front of me, who gave me a comforting smile and sat down beside me. The corners of my lips turned upwards into a small smile, as I waited for her to speak. She did, soon enough. "I'm not too sure what to say." she said softly.
I pushed a strand of hair behind my ear. "It's okay."
"Well, I'm Liz, and I was visiting here for a week and I was going to stop and have lunch with your parents..." she trailed, and I closed my eyes for a second before nodding. "Well, I'm here because when you were born, your parents said my husband and I would look after you if they were...unable to." again, I simply nodded. "So, Faith, you'll be coming back to Australia to live with us." She finished, and looked over to meet my eyes.
I blinked, once, twice and slowly nodded my head. "Alright."
We stayed like that for a while, as I let it sink in. The thought of going back to Australia brought a small smile to my face. Not that I remember much, it's just the thought of going back to where i was born. Back to where I'm not surrounded by American accents and having to bite my tongue where I nearly say thongs instead of flip-flops.
