"No!" My mom said, starting to cry as she dropped the phone on the kitchen floor. "Mom, what's wrong?!" I yelled from my room running to the kitchen. She sat there crying I picked up the phone. "Who is this?" I asked with a nervous, quiver voice. "No! No!" I yelled, crying on the floor next to mom.
"Riley. Riley." Some one said, shaking me. I woke up. "Huh?" I said, still a little out of it. "Dinner is almost ready." Grandma said. "Ok, thanks grandma." I said rubbing my eyes. I headed up stairs and cleaned up. I took a shower and got dressed. I headed down stairs and went to the kitchen where I found mom helping grandma cook. "What's for dinner?" I asked. "Chicken Alfredo." Mom answered
making a smiley, hungry face at me. "Yum." I said raising my eye brows. "Where's grandpa?" I asked. "Watching golf in the cave." Grandma answered. The cave was the other living room with the library. I walked down the hall and turned right into the cave. There grandpa was, sitting in the same old black leather lazy-boy chair he'd had for years. "How's golf?" I asked walking to the chair next to him to sit down. "Well, it's looking good, nice swings and we've got a couple pars." He said. "That's good." I said, continuing to watch the tv.
Moments later grandma called us for dinner and we sat down at the table. "How long do you plan on staying?" Grandma asked. "Well.." I started to answer before mom interrupted me. "I have only a day or two off work so I have to head back soon, but I thought if Riley wants, she can stay for a couple months, like the whole summer if that's ok?." Mom said. I sat there in shock. The words that came out of her mouth was crazy. I don't know when she planned on telling me but sooner would've been better, you know like a heads up before she just leaves me here with my grandparents. What?, does she hate me or something? I mean don't get me wrong, I love my grandparents but the whole summer. Hello, I have friends and a life back home. Was this her idea the whole time? Go to Florida, get rid of Riley and just leave her here for the whole summer. I snapped back to reality. "Um, are you kidding?" I asked, which sounded kind of rude so I made my next sentence nicer, covering it up. "That would be awesome." I said in my easy to tell I'm lying voice. "Yeah sure if you want to stay I don't see why not." Grandpa said. "Great!" Mom said. I sat there in silence for the rest of dinner. How could mom leave me here? Was she crazy? Possibly drinking again? Or even taking drugs? Was she on meds again? I need to talk to her doctor. After dinner I went up stairs and got ready for bed. I was brushing my teeth when mom came up the stairs and passed me. I tried yelling at her but I spit toothpaste all over the floor and myself. I quickly spit it in the sink and rinsed my mouth. I ran down the hall to her room. I knocked and then opened the door. "All summer!" I yelled at her. "What? I thought you wanted to." She said. "Why? Why would I want to be here all summer?" I questioned her in an stern tone. "Because it's Florida and you never see your grandparents." She said, her not liking my tone so she raised hers. "Are you serious mom? Your just gonna leave me here for three months ?" I said lower my tone and changing it to a confused one. "Yes I'm serious, you'll have a fun time. Grandma told me there's some cute guys at the beach not that far away." She said trying to cheer me up. "Mom, do I have to? I have friends and a life at home." I said getting upset. "Yes you do, grandma is already really excited. She told me she wants to take you shopping and spoil you." She answered. I gave her a frown and left the room. I headed to bed. I needed to get my mind off things and sleep. Maybe staying down here won't be too bad? I tried convincing myself.
