Asriel gives me a confused, terrified, protective look. "There's no way you can be serious right now," he says sternly.
"I am," I say. I've been giving him that steely, determined (haha) look during this whole conversation, but unlike most people I meet, he ignores it completely. "I have to know what's going on. No matter what that takes."
"But you've still not recovered!" Asriel protests. "Mom said you have to stay."
"Mom doesn't have to know."
"We can't just... lie to her, Chara." Asriel's voice is desperate. I know almost certainly that Toriel/Mom would know it's my choice if I want to help Gaster or not. Asriel just doesn't want me leaving.
"Look, Asriel, I know you're scared. But this is my decision. I promise I'll still stay here if I can, and if I can't, I'll visit as much as possible. Okay?"
I can tell Asriel is on the verge of tears. It almost makes me want to pull back, to tell him I won't do it. But I hold fast and smile at him.
"It'll be okay. We're still a family."
It feels weird, saying that word - family.
"Right. And I'll always trust you, Chara." He gives me a smile back. "I'll never doubt you."
(A.N. Sorry this chapter is so short - my "chapters" are more just sections, but they're often going to be short, so sorry again)
