(A/N: I'm going to change the music thing a little bit? I 'm going to do just one song that I want you to listen to as my "mood" as oppose to a whole album. Makes things a bit easier. Enjoy :) edit: I added the lyric video because the regular video wasn't working for some in the states )
Mood: Back Against The Wall - Cage the Elephant
"Why did it have to be damned floppy disks," I grumbled, looking at them in despair.
"It's alright, Jessica. You can do this," Hotch said as he walked behind me.
"I feel like I've gone back to the Stone Age, " I replied unenthusiastically, answering the video call from Penelope.
I heard a chair being pulled up beside me and then Hotch was beside me. He gave me a small smile.
"Why don't you tell me every little thing you know about floppy disks," he suggested.
"That's a good idea, sweetie," Penelope smiled.
"Okay? So they were invented in 1967. The first disks were 8 inches; the next generation was in 1981 and was 5.25 inches. This is one from the nineties, third generation, so it's 3.5 inches and holds up to 1.44 megabytes. The unsub probably picked these ones because it's less likely to get dirty. They can record information easily and instantly, it's easy to erase and reuse, they're super inexpensive. Only thing that's shitty is that it's a sequential device, which means that it only goes beginning to end. There's five parts: The read/write heads, the drive motor, the stepper motor, the mechanical frame, and the circuit board. The computer program passes an instruction to the computer hardware to write a data file on a floppy disk, which is very similar to a single platter in a except that it is spinning much slower, with far less capacity and slower access time. The computer hardware and the floppy-disk-drive controller start the motor in the diskette drive to spin the floppy disk. The disk has many concentric tracks on each side. Each track is divided into smaller segments called sectors. A second motor, called a stepper motor, rotates a worm-gear shaft, which is a miniature version of the worm gear in a bench-top vise, in minute increments that match the spacing between tracks. The time it takes to get to the correct track is called "access time." This stepping action of the stepper motor moves the read/write heads. The floppy-disk-drive electronics know how many steps the motor has to turn to move the read/write heads to the correct track. The read/write heads stop at the track. The read head checks the prewritten address on the formatted diskette to be sure it is using the correct side of the diskette and is at the proper track. The energized write head puts data on the diskette by magnetizing minute, iron, bar-magnet particles embedded in the diskette surface. The magnetized particles have their north and south poles oriented so their pattern may be detected and read on a subsequent read operation. Holy shit. I know what to do."
"I feel like a dictionary just threw up on me," Penelope admitted.
"Sorry, mom," I blushed.
"No, this is good, Jessica. Tell me what you need," Hotch asked.
"Well I have my own laptop. But I need a laptop with Windows XP, first of all. I'll need an USB floppy disk drive, and a flash drive. I think that XP is the only program that will work with with the USB floppy disk drive. I also need a coffee with two expresso shots and some breakfast," I replied with a small chuckle.
"Done, done, and done. Get your things. We'll go into the bullpen at the police station to see if we can find you a computer. I will get a car around and we'll get you that coffee," he smiled.
He gave me a slap on the shoulder and hurried out of the room. I looked at Penelope.
"I think you're becoming one of them," she smiled happily.
"You think?"
"I think so."
(OI! I know this is hella short, but hopefully you guys can have a little insight between the two and how they work together. Also, I know how he isn't on the show anymore. However, this is an alternate timeline so he's still here. xoxo)
