My italics doesn't work so I'm using bold instead. Kk? This is my first book so it's not my best writing. If you don't like it, don't criticize it. Thanks! Oh, and I also need a cover so please send me your ideas!

Chapter One

They were chasing me. I knew they would. I tried to lash out at my unseen attackers but my feet were frozen like ice. I screamed into the darkness, " Who are you?" I didn't expect for them to answer back. One of them laughed cruelly at me, " Why, your worst nightmare!" As usual, I woke up in a puddle of sweat.

Mother was trying to comfort me with hot steaming coco and a hug. Like every time I had that dream, I didn't tell Mother about it. It would only make it worse. Father was dead and after four years, Mother was still mourning.

Only one person could help me. We never spoke of him, as he brought bad luck to everyone but I needed to see my uncle.

After two hours of driving, I looked out the window to look at the landscape, but all I saw were the three people, if they were people, who chased me in my dreams. Great. Now I'm hallucinating. I shook my head and after, they we're gone except for the cold chill crawling down my spine. Who were those sickos?

As we arrived, I started to sweat for some unknown reason. Uncle always had that effect on everyone he saw. Now I would get my answers.

We barged into his home without knocking or ringing the doorbell. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not the kind to be rude but that's how desperate I was.

My uncle stared at me surprised with sweat pouring down his face, and weakly stammered, "What are you doing here? You're supposed to be dead! The Cold Ones always get the victim their after! Now we're all doomed!"

None of it made sense, and I considered asking him if he was ok when I caught my mom whispering in his ear. If my senses were normal, I wouldn't have heard, but they weren't. She whispered harshly, "Don't tell her! I can't lose her too! The pain is just too much to handle!"

With that hanging in the air, she broke down in body racking sobs and crumpled to the ground. Now the question bouncing around my brain was, what or who the hell are " the Cold Ones?"

But I needed to get to school. Without a word, I turned around in one swift motion and told my mother where I was going.

I go to MacLaine High School, down in the south. Nothing exciting happens down in my small town where I live. When I got there, I waved to my friend Sasha. We were complete opposites. I had dark brown hair that was almost black and amber eyes while she had blonde hair and blue eyes. I was unnaturally tall for my age while she was petite and short. I was known as "geeky" while she was very popular.

" Hey Amber! There's a party at Gary's house tonight, you coming?"

That was another thing, Sasha loved to show off and be in public while I liked to stick to myself. But I agreed anyway, just to make her happy. Little did I know that my life would change drastically.

That night I wore a small blouse with a mini skirt, but when I was read to head out, my mother begged me to take a small knife in my handbag for safety. I rolled my eyes but agreed.

At first, it was really awkward but then I saw HIM. He had pale skin, the brightest blue eyes, medium height, and dirty blonde hair. When we locked eyes, it was like there was nobody in the world but us. It seemed like hours but was actually seconds. He was the first to break the spell, looking away again something else.

When he looked at another girl, I had this unexpected felling of jealousy. Well I'll show him, I thought. That night, I flirted with almost every boy at the party and having more fun I ever had before. Once, I caught him looking at me!

When one of the other kids, I think his name was Mike, started heading toward me, handsome looked horrified. Suddenly my eyesight was better and my hearing, and other senses. My small knife suddenly morphed into a giant sword. The handle was small and felt like it was made especially for me. Without hesitation, I swung my blade in an arc and sliced his head clean off! I was horrified for a moment but then was filled with an empty feeling in the part of my heart in that felt fear.

Handsome whispered to me, "Those skills are polished Amber! I knew you had the skills! Just call for me if you need my help! My name is Aidan!"

Then he left while I kept looking at him, probably drooling. I clasped my jaw shut and fled the house in terror. At home, I called on Aidan and he appeared seemingly out of nowhere and whispered to me, "I'll meet you in your room and we'll talk."

I didn't question him about how he knew where my room was. He probably knew everything. When I went inside, my mother asked why I was home late but I just said that I went to a big party and had trouble getting home. As I headed up to my room, I considered all possibilities and decided to take a knife just to be safe.

At the top, I took a deep breath and opened the door. Of course, he was there, sitting on my bed like he belonged there and causally said, "Took you long enough. I guess you want some answers." He sat there with this irritating smirk on his face that I wanted to slap off.

"First of all, what was that? What are the 'Cold Ones?' How do you know where I live? Who are you really?" At the mention of the Cold Ones, his face paled and he looked down.

"You have a lot of questions, don't you? I can't answer those. I'm not allowed to. You have to figure out yourself." He raised his gaze to me with sorrow and smiled sympathetically at me.

"A big help you are. " I sarcastically said.

"Hey! Don't blame me! I'll just get in trouble if I tell you this stuff. I got a second chance, I just can't mess that up!"

When he said that, I naturally assumed that he got in trouble for a crime or something and backed into the far corner of the room shivering. Not in cold but in fear of what the might do to me.

In cold sweat, I yelled across the room, "Stay away from me! I should be calling the police right now!"

Panicky he replied, "No don't, please!"

"Why shouldn't I," I retorted.

"Because I'm your guardian."

"What the hell is that?"

"An immortal soul trapped inside a mortal body assigned to protect the next Defender. I was given this job because I did something bad in the past. I just can't repeat that mistake."

The ground rushed up to meet me and everything went black.
