It was finally dawn. I was so excited to start my training with Aidan, I was practically jumping up and down. After minutes of grumbling and grunting when I shook him awake, Aidan finally woke up to train. "Why do we have to wake up so ear-," as he was cut off by a ground shaking yawn. "Fine," he grunted at last. "Race you to the middle!"

As I shot off, laughing the whole time, I realized a little too late that he wasn't racing. I had a bad feeling in my gut that he was watching to evaluate me. In the blink of an eye, he caught up to me and said quite bluntly,"You're really slow. Let's practice speed and work on it, okay?" It wasn't like he was giving me a choice so I nodded, my feelings hurt by his comment.

"Let's start by doing some stretches to warm up our bodies," but I didn't know that what he meant as stretches were actually back-breaking poses. One of them that I couldn't even get close to was the one where you had to bend forwards and touch your chest to the ground while also reaching for your toes. I really didn't get how Aidan did it with such grace, as if it was the easiest thing he could ever do. But of course, when I asked Mr. Flexible how he was doing it, he said practice and skill. Seriously?

When it was time to stand up, I let go a breath of relief. "Now let's have some fun!" Apperantly, fun in his language meant torture. We did suicides aka man builders.( That's when you run to a place and run back and then you run further and run back and so on.) I was pretty sure it was 4000 metres along when I started to huff and puff while Aidan ran on without a single drop of sweat. I was about 200 metres behind him and I was running at my top speed. All of a sudden, I felt a burst of speed starting up from my toes and I raced past Aidan.

When we stopped, we were both breathing heavily and tired. I asked Aidan about the burst of speed and he replied,"It's because every Defender is part paranormal creature. The last one was part ghost and the one before that was part mermaid. I wonder what you will be. It usually shows up around their seventeenth birthday." Well, that had to be a coincidence, cause my seventeenth birthday was a week away.

Keith had made a wonderful breakfast, fried eggs and bacon that I had no idea where he got it, but I was so hungry I didn't really care anymore. Gobbling down my fifth helping, Aidan looked at me like I was crazy while he was finishing his first. Since, we were done, Keith with a wave of his hand, made all the plates clean themselves up and disappear. Quite fascinated, I asked him how to do it. The unsatisfactory reply I got was not enough to quench my curiosity. All he said was that it was a family secret of the angels.

When we set off once again, we stopped by a lake for a drink of water near mid afternoon. As I leaned down, a ripple appeared on the water. Surprised and scared at the same time, I called Aidan and Keith over to inspect it. When they bent down, a head bobbed out of the water, splashing us all over. The girl was laughing merrily while we were soaked from head to toe.

Aidan got all mad and red while shouting at the poor girl. I felt so sorry for her, I broke it up just in time to hear her whimper, "I was just playing..." That was what broke my resolve and I reached down and hugged her tight inside the circle of my arms.

"It's okay," I whispered reassuringly to her.

"Thanks for that. My name is Aqua Waters and I'm a mermaid," she gave me her hand to shake. I gladly shook it while in awe of her and her scaly tail, glimmering a rainbow in the sunlight.

"I've never met a mermaid before!" I was so excited I was close to squealing. And I do not squeal.

"That's because the demons are slowly wiping us out," she said sadly. "I've come on a journey to avenge my family, who fell into a demon's hands and were never seen again..."

I decided that she seemed like a trustworthy person so I asked her if she wanted to join us in destroying the demons and she agreed. After lunch, which was fantastic, as usual, we set off again. Aqua traveled underneath the ground, through the rivers there and we ran with Keith in the lead and Aidan in the back. This felt so natural, it seemed that I had been with these three for most of my life. We traveled in companionable silence, occasionally broken by one of Aqua's jokes and riddles.

Not as three but four now. And we had a new friend. Everything was good, for now.

Aidan POV

I had a big problem. I was in love with Amber even though He told me not to fall in love with her or she would fail... I guess it was too late for that. I would just have to start, uh..., not liking her anymore. I didn't know if that was even possible, but I'd try. For the sake of everyone in the world although they didn't know it.
