Chapter 8
“Come on, guys, pile in” Some man by the name of Paul showed up a few minutes after we all finished eating. And now all of us were huddled up in the back seat of a van—snug as a caterpillar in a cocoon.
For once Niall was situated away from me, Paul had placed him in between Zayn and Louis in the front row. At least they were still facing me, so I cant complain. Liam was riding shot gun. And Harry, Lauren, Eleanor and I were all squished in the back. To save room, Lauren decided to sit on Harry's lap—it was kinda cute.
“Got a big day, boys” Paul called out from the front while taking a sharp right turn, sending me into Eleanor's side. The boys let out something smiler to a pleasure filled reply, but it was laced with annoyance. Did they not like this 'recording' thing? If Paul came to pick them up then maybe it was a mandatory thing and if given the chance would have ran away from it. The thought instantly made me worry, was it so bad that they would do anything to avoid it?
Well, right now the boys problems were ranked bottom of the barrel when it came to all mine—as selfish as it might be—this was my fist car ride. Every bounce and bump had me clinging onto the seat like a petrified bunny. And in a way, I was one. Small, pale and scared out of my mind. Thank the sun that the ride didn't last long and we shortly arrive at a tall, platinum colored building. I think humans called them sky scrapers, and now I could see why. At a grounds angle, it just looked like a really tall building. But now with my enhanced human vision, I could see how high it really went. Like a big silver claw batting at the clouds above.
“Here we are!” Paul announced, way too cheerfully for my taste. I didn't want to think of him as a bad guy, but when he was so happy over something the boys didn't seem to enjoy, it was hard not to.
With the push of a button I was out and so was everyone else. It took another eternity to walk around the perimeter of the building, then yet another to navigate the insides of it. But that didn't surprise me. With a building this large I would be willing to bet my bottom dollar that I would be dead before reaching the top. Too bad I have no human currency, back in my planty world there was none and everything you could ever desire was free. Another thing that boggled me about humans. How come they didn't just help each other out? After all, it would be much easier to get everything you need without having to earn money—oh right, getting side tracked.
Paul led us down tons of red carpeted hallways before we finally came to a big brass looking door.
“Go on in boys” Paul ushered them in, be when us girls moved ahead he held out his arm to stop us, “Sorry, cant afford any distractions today, ladies”
Flash forward. Me, Eleanor and Lauren were sitting on a bench. Lauren had the idea to wait at something called a 'mall', she would 'text' Harry where we went so they could come meet up with us once they were done.
People of every shape side and color rushed by us. I had no idea there was so much variety in humans. Fascination was short lived though, as now my anxieties about Niall were though the roof. There was no telling what they were doing on the other side of that door, I would feel so much better if Paul just let us in, not knowing anything was just the cherry on top of the nervous wreak cake. The other girls seemed much calmer to me in comparison, so maybe it wasn’t anything too dangerous.
“Want to shop?” Eleanor mumbled, she didn't seem too enthusiastic about though. Did humans come to this mall building to shop? I'm pretty sure that shopping was the act of spending the currency I brought up earlier in return for goods. It would be interesting to see how this took place, but I had no currency.
“Can't” Lauren sighed, “Not a penny to my name until next Friday” Does that mean she had no currency?
“We could just browse?” Eleanor suggested.
“Well..” Lauren pondered for a moment or two, “Sure, why not”
We all decided—well, not much input from me—to go to a store called “Dress Emporium”, it wasn’t all that fancy, but it had a mirror in every nook and cranny. And did that ever excite me, back at home, I could never see what I looked like other then the obvious, blond hair, pail skin.
“Now, um...The boys should be done around-” Lauren stared, but I was long gone to the first mirror before she finished.
Long blond hair, obviously. Pale skin, not a big discovery....And my face.
I had very feint freckles over my cheeks and nose, and my eyes were a very deep, familiar, shade of green. Almost captivating. You could almost jump right in and sink. If Eleanor didn't drag me away to the changing room I would have gazed away the day. Wonder if that green was something left over from my roots—no pun intended.
“I want to get you something, Eve” She thrusted something white and soft into my hands then pushed me into a stall, “Think of it as a...Mandatory welcome gift”
I wanted to retaliate, saying I didn't want her to spend her own hard earned currency on me. But then I saw what she had gave me.
“Just come out when you're done” Eleanor called.
I didn't speak. Just slipped into my gift. Amazing how I knew exactly how it was meant to put on, and once it was fitted onto me. I took a good long look in the mirror.
She had picked out a short ruffled sun dress that could have made anyone look so pure and untouched. But on me, it looked like heaven—It sounds really self centered. But I promise you, that if you were to be there in the changing room with me, your heart would have stopped mid beat.
Eleanor was a talent in fashion.
“You done? Eve?” Eleanor called again, urging me out of the stall.
My finger just tapped the cool metal of the handle when everything fell white.
