" Emma get out of bed, its 2 in the afternoon you need to eat"I laid in the same position I had been in for the last few hours just staring at the ceiling, listening as my mother's footsteps slowly faded. I attempted to push myself up. My muscles gave way which made me fall on my back. I lay there for a second before rolling onto my side. Then was able to push myself up.
Walking slowly out to the kitchen, using the rails that had been installed for me to pull myself and the heavy oxygen tank around. My body was weak and small. My lips chapped. And my head pounding. I didn't look like the pretty girls with cancer that you would see on tumblr or any sort of social media for that matter. I was skin and bone, from letting myself go. I refused to eat since I just wanted to die.
"Sweetie, sit down here, I made you your favourite, a vegetable curry pastie. Only a small one since we a trying to get you to eat solids again" I looked at her and fell forward a little. She sat down beside me to make sure I okay. It felt like I was swallowing razor blades. I needed to eat. 'Put meat on my bones' as mum would say. She sat there beside me, tucking my hair behind my ear and helping me if I ever needed it.
I was grateful to have my family. Normally a 22 year old would have their own home, living their own life. While their parents sat on the side and watched then grow. My parents were watching me fade away instead.

I decided to go for a walk since the day looked lovely and I was bored. I felt a little tired so I went to a small cafe on the main street. The strong smell of the coffee greeted me as I entered, the small black tables full of people talking amongst themselves filled the front half of the building. Waitresses would pass me with meals to be handed to their customers. I stood awkwardly, looking up at the board, then down at the cakes and sweets that were in front of me. I walked a little closer and a boy appeared.
"How may I help you?" He said as he smiled. He looked happy, even though the cafe was busy. His hair was a bright blue,it was scruffy and you could see his roots growing through at the bottom. But it looked really cool on him.
"Hi, um could I have a cappuccino to have here?". I was nervous, I hadn't been here in a while. Let alone spoken to anyone.
"Yes of course, was there any sugar with that?" He smiled again, his eyes would crinkle up and I thought it was cute.
" Oh yeah..just one thanks". He looked down at the cash register and typed a few things in. I couldn't get a glimpse of his name badge which started to bother me.
"Was there anything else?" His question snapped me out of my trance, I looked at the cakes again then back at him.
"And just a orange and poppy seed muffin thank you" I watched him punch the rest of my order into the register.
"That comes to $7.45" I looked down at my purse and pulled out a $10 note. While handing it to him I was able to see his name.
Joshua.
It suited him. Such a nice name. It was average, like mine. But he was attractive, I looked like a skeleton.
Joshua gave me a number to put on my table so they knew who to bring my order to. I sat at my usual spot in one of the booths on the left side of the cafe. I pulled my favourite magazine, 'Frankie' out of my backpack and read it whilst waiting for my coffee and cake. I would look up every now and then and look at Joshua as he served people or was making coffee.
A small child came in and asked for a cookie. She told him that she used her pocket money to buy her favourite cookie. Joshua smiled in the bright way he always seems to do and gave her the cookie and said he would pay for it. That she should save to buy a new toy or a pretty dress. She said thank you and was quick to tell her mother about the nice man who gave her the cookie. I watched them leave, then looked back down at the magazine I almost forgot I had in my hands.
A few minutes later a young girl came over and gave me my coffee and muffin.
"I do apologise about the wait, we have been quite busy today" She looked tired, but she was able to pull a small smile.
"No really it's okay, I didn't mind waiting. I understand"
"Thank you, enjoy your coffee miss" She nodded and quickly walked back behind the counter.
I took a sip of the cappuccino which tasted like heaven. I had always loved the coffee here. And their cakes were always perfect. They were never dry or never too sweet. They were perfect.
Once I was done I attempted to carry the cup and plate over to the counter since I never liked leaving a mess. The waitresses and staff had too much to deal with already, they were busy. I might as well help out by cleaning up my mess. I tried putting the cup on the plate but my hand was shaky. I could only use one hand since the other was needed to drag the stupid oxygen tank.
"Here let me help you" A familiar voice rang. I turned to see Joshua, he smiled and looked down at the cup and plate and reached out.
"You looked a little stressed so I thought I would come out and get these for you, thank you for cleaning up though, normally people just get up and leave"
"I have always thought it was common courtesy to clean up your own mess. Especially if you are out if public"
"I second that" Joshua replied, every person I meet that works in retail seems to think the exact same thing. Poor people get treated like slaves.
"Well, I better go, thank you for the coffee and cake they were great. Nice meeting you Joshua" I said while putting my backpack on.
"Call me josh, aha, anyway enjoy your afternoon miss" He smiled and left to put the dishes away.
I couldn't stop thinking about the blue haired boy the whole way home.
