We kept cracking jokes as we attempted to remove all the makeup. "What did the skeleton say when he was angry?" Brendon held back laughter as he said this. "I don't know, what?"
"THAT REALLY RATTLES MY BONES!" He blew up in ironic laughter and I just stared at him, pokerface on. He quickly stopped laughing and stared back at me. "Staring contest?" I didn't blink and he stared into my eyes, "God what are you, a reptile?" He groaned as his eyes shut, finally. I threw my arms up in victory, "I AM ZEE CHAMPION!"
He rolled his eyes and took and wipe to my face, he was careful, and was inches from my face. He looked so gentle when he wiped off the makeup. "You had a little left under your eye." He looked up and smiled, pecking my cheek. My eyes 'lit up like fireworks' according to him and crescent smiled spread on my face.
"Thanks." I whispered as he went to his room, he walked back out in a pajamas. "I should get going." I smiled and stuffed my my skeleton outfit into my bag. "Tonight was fun, thanks." I made my way to the door and stepped outside, and Brendon followed.
"We should watch the stars." He excitedly spoke as he glanced at the sky. "It's actually clear tonight, please?" I sighed and threw my bag down in my car.
"Sure."
The noise that escaped Brendon's mouth was insane, it was a squeal of delight and a scream of defeat. "What the hell was that." I almost choked from laughing so hard.
"U-Uh.. something." He smiled and got into my car. "We going in the desert?" I questioned him as I scooted into my seat, turning the car on. He nodded silently and leaned back onto the seat, staring at the ceiling.
~~~
I pulled over onto an open, seemingly infinite expanse of desert. The stars shined like crystals in the night sky. I tapped Brendon and he shook awake, nearly slapping me. I giggled as I got out a blanket to lay down but he shook his head.
"We can lay in the sand."
"But it's uncomfortable."
He rolled his eyes and got out, laying on the ground in front of my car, staring at the sky. "Never mind bring the blanket." He yelled, his voice echoing into the darkness. I got out the quilts and laid it on the ground, Brendon instantly rolled into it.
I sat up next to him and looked at the sky.
"I think that's Gemini." He whispered casually.
I didn't respond, because I didn't know what to say, and there was an awkward silence. Cicadas chirped in the distance and cars drove past every few minutes. I think both of us felt so safe and at home then. Just this fuzzy feeling inside your chest when you know you're in love, the pound of your heart, the dilating of your pupils, the butterflies in your stomach, the warmness in your cheeks. It felt safe.
It felt like a future.
