Petra's POV

We were waiting, in a line I guess. He said we could use the orb up ahead to view the world below or something, to check on those we left behind- or something like that.

I was just kinda going through the motions at those point, confused, wondering if I'm just knocked out and having some weird comatose dream. But then I remember that I died every time, and I'm back to the beginning of wondering if anything here is right.

But then something wants to be happy, and I can't even imagine it- being happy that is. Without my friends? The people I care most about? How can I be happy when I know they aren't safe?

"Come on kid, we're next." Magnus' call brought me back from the same circle of thoughts, and I stepped towards the orb, finding my heart seeming to be pulled towards it.

It was in that moment I knew that something wasn't right, even before I had laid my hand on the screen.

Chapter Eighteen 2/2- Disregarding Orders

The two guards on either side had their arms crossed and stared at me pointedly as I crept my way up to the screen like it could kill. Though I guess since I was already dead that wasn't possible. So I placed my hand onto the orb, and watched as the clear picture materialized.

Jessie and the others were being led through some weird tunnels that seemed to be stone brick by people wearing masks and holding spears. The fact that Jennifer was missing her tail now worried me, but the fact that Olivia and her were helping each other was more worrying.

Axel hobbled behind them, limping badly as Lukas kept him steady if he tilted too far to the right. As for the blond his once imacualte hair was stained red in places, and he winced every time a guard poked at his left arm.

Jessie was at the back of the group, walking the slowest, looking the worst. Though she nly walked with a minor limp, her hands were covered in blood, and her cheeks were stained with tears. In other words it was the most terrifying thing to look at.

I think I could speak for everyone when I say that we were all used to Jessie staying strong for the rest of us, being the brave one, but like this? It was scary to see her so hopeless looking.

"See? They're fine." Magnus points out, making me shake my head instantly. No, they weren't. I knew that. The guards looked cocky as they shoved their spears at my friends to keep them moving, and they all looked as if they had lost their chance at winning.

"No they aren't. They need help." I mutter, not wanting anyone else to heat it. When Jessie falls I feel myself ready to jump forward and help, but can't, as I'm not there. The guards prod at her, trying to get her up, but when she doesn't comply, they raise their spears.

Without thinking my hand is yanked away and my wings are spread, ready to take off, but someone grabs hold of my foot before I can get higher up.

"No. This is an order. You are not to go back down there to help. Its against the rules." Magnus states, narrowing his anger filled eyes. The guards pull me down onto the layer of cloud, making it almost impossible to move.

Almost that is. "You will learn to like it here." The one guard says, holding me firmly as I struggle to free myself. "Its nice once you learn that you cannot do anything for the world below." That sentence, the way the words were said are what gave me my strength to blow them off of me with a perfectly aimed blow with my wings to their torsos, watching as the tumble into the dusty clouds.

"Sorry Magnus. But I'm gonna have to disregard those orders you gave me." I start, flying up into the sky, looking down once more to say, "Besides, I'm not gonna sit here and do nothing."

With that I shot into the sky, finding stars awaiting me as I did so. They shone brightly and colored my wings a light blue, like the armor I had left behind. Once I knew I was high enough I let myself fall, finding the wind blowing upwards through my hair almost comforting.

And as I fell, my wings limp against the current of air, I knew that if I was doing something that was unheard of, impossible, and maybe even stupid.

I just gave up the afterlife to save my friends.
