Chapter 6: Maya's Sweet 16

*its the morning of January 3 (6 weeks before Josh's) and Maya spent the night at Riley's as she does every year on her birthday. It's 5 am*
Maya: *feels someone shaking her* WHAT THE HELL!
Josh: *whispers* jeez ferret it's just me. I just wanted to say happy sweet 16!
Maya: god damn it Josh! You couldn't wait until I'm actually awake to say it? *looks at Riley to make sure she's still asleep*
Josh: okay two things: one, easy on the cursing because I don't want Riley to start; and two, I wanted to be the first one to say happy birthday *hugs her*
Maya: sorry Josh. I will try to not to curse so much. And for the record Riley can't even say the word crap and that's not even a legit curse word *laughs quietly*
Josh: *laughs* Maya I'm so glad Riley has you as her best friend. You're the Shawn to her Cory. I've heard some stories about you getting her into trouble and she gets you out of it. I always wanted a friend that would be my Shawn *puts a strand of Maya's hair behind her ear*
Maya: *smirks* well boing... since I'm already your Topanga I could be your Shawn if you want me to. I don't think the universe would mind *relaxes in his arms*
Josh: you know what ferret? I'd like that. Who would've thought that my Shawn and Topanga would be the same person? *kisses her forehead*
Maya: wait! What stories did you hear about? *blushes*
Josh: *laughs* let's go in the living room so we don't wake up Riles *grabs Maya's hand and leads her to the living room bay window*
Maya: okay spill Josh! *curls on his lap*
Josh: well there was the homework rebellion in 7th grade. Cory called me and was like "I know you haven't seen Maya since you were kids but do you know what she just did?" And when I found out I laughed. It made me wish I was 3 years younger and in that class with you *plays with Maya's hair* it made me think of all the mischief we got into as kids.
Maya: oh man that was a good day! Except for the sprinklers going off *laughs* Matthews is a good teacher. Perhaps my favorite. I may not get the best grades but I do listen to him. He teaches us a lot. And I do remember the craziness we did as kids. Remember when I was 7 and you were 10 we decided to go to Feeny's and silly string his car? *laughs*
Josh: that I do. Actually now that I think about it, I think you were my Shawn all along. We may have not seen each other a lot as kids but I do remember getting anxious to see you when Cory would come visit *rubs the back of his neck*
Maya: Josh, can I ask you something important? *looks at him and all he can see in her eyes is pure happiness and content*
Josh: of course Maya. You can talk to me about anything *smiles at her*
Maya: when did you know that you liked me? *bites her lip*
Josh: *takes a deep breath* honestly I knew it when I was 10. I liked you but at the time I thought it was as friends. Then when I saw you when you were 13 and I said you grew up gorgeous I realized I had a crush on you. But I kept pulling the age card because I could tell it wouldn't be right to date until you're older. But when you crashed the college party I knew I had to tell you how I felt. It was eating at me. I saw that you were mature for your age. I didn't mean to not be around after that. I just got busy with high school graduation and getting ready for college. When I went to the ski lodge and saw the triangle, I got jealous until you told me you didn't like Lucas. When you told me you liked me I told you I liked you because I knew I couldn't keep it in. Now that I'm thinking back to when I was 10, it was a crush back then but I pushed it away because we didn't see each other a lot. Does that answer your question ferret? *looks at her to see her smiling*
Maya: Josh I had a crush on you when we were kids too but I didn't know what to do because we only saw each other once in a while. When I saw you at Christmas when I was 13, I knew I liked you and I knew that it was a deep like. I couldn't explain how I felt until the college party. I may have said I liked you at the party but that's when I knew I love you *hugs him tight*
Josh: *hugs her* happy birthday my gorgeous ferret *kisses her head*
Maya: can I stay here all day? *smiles*
Josh: eventually everyone is going to get up and see us *laughs* but honestly I don't want to let you go yet.
Maya: same boing. I don't want to leave your arms yet *curls up and can feel his body warmth* what time is it Josh?
Cory: *pops out of the hallway* its 7 am.
Joshaya: *screams from shock*
Topanga: *comes into the living room* calm down kids!
Cory: how long were you two up? Were you talking all night? *looks at the two of them* and you two look cozy right now *laughs*
Josh: I woke her up at 5 to say happy birthday and then we came out here and talked *smiles at Maya curled up in his arms* and if you guys haven't figured it out, our bodies somehow gravitate to each other and she ends up on my lap *laughs*
Topanga: I know why that tends to happen Josh. You two have opened up to each other. You let your guard down around the other. You feel comfortable. Maya let me ask you, does it feel awkward sitting in Josh's arms right now? *smiles knowingly at them*
Maya: honestly no. It feels natural. It feels like I'm supposed to be here *smiles*
Josh: and watch, if I let her go now we're both going to feel emptiness *buries his face in Maya's hair*
Topanga: well I'm sorry for that but you're going to have to let go of each other because Riley is up and so is Auggie. It's time to eat *smiles and walks to the kitchen*
Cory: yeah and I know you guys are all kinds of adorable but I don't really want to see Maya in Josh's lap *laughs and goes to help Topanga*
Maya: *gets off of the bay window* you're right Josh. I feel empty now *pouts*
Josh: *chuckles* no pouting ferret or you won't get your gift.
Maya: Josh, you didn't have to spend money on me. Plus Christmas was over a week ago.
Josh: Maya you only get one 16th birthday. The fact that I'm here to celebrate with you makes it even more special *smirks cockily*
Maya: *laughs* you tell yourself that boing *goes to sit next to Riley at the table*
Riley: happy birthday peaches! How does it feel to be 16? *smiles and hugs her*
Maya: it feels the same as being 15 Riles *laughs* what's for breakfast Topanga?
Topanga: pancakes of course *winks*
Maya: awesome! And don't even try taking a pancake from me Josh *eyes him suspiciously*
Josh: *puts his hands up in surrender* I wasn't going to gorgeous.
Auggie: happy birthday Maya! *hands her a picture of the Matthews family and Maya*
Maya: *tears up in joy* oh Auggie this is amazing. Thanks bud *hugs him*
Cory: oh we're doing presents now? *sarcastically laughs* Maya we got you something!
Maya: Mr. Matthews you guys really didn't have to *blushes*
Topanga: nonsense! You're family! Happy birthday Maya *hands Maya a neatly wrapped gift*
Maya: *unwraps the gift and gasps* oh my god! This is incredible! *starts pulling out art supplies out of the box* you guys didn't have to do this *hugs Cory and Topanga*
Cory: you're an incredible artist Maya. Maybe one day we'll see your artwork in a museum *smiles*
Riley: my turn! *hands Maya a medium sized box* happy birthday!
Maya: *opens the box and sees a picture of her and Riley in a gold frame* Riley this is great! This was the first day of high school *smiles*
Josh: is it my turn yet? *bounces in excitement*
Maya: are you sure you're the one turning 19? *laughs*
Josh: *smiles* happy birthday Maya *hands her a small box*
Maya: *opens the box and almost drops it* Josh... *pulls out a gold ring*
Josh: now before everyone starts hyperventilating, it's not an engagement ring. I'm pretty sure Shawn would behead me if I asked to marry his 16 year old daughter *chuckles*
Maya: if it's not an engagement ring then what is it? *looks at Josh curiously*
Josh: it's a promise ring. A physical promise to someday. Look at the engraving Maya *smiles*
Maya: *looks at the ring and smiles at the words* it says "JM and MH long game to someday". Josh this is beautiful! *hugs him tight*
Josh: *places the ring on her right ring finger* I promise Maya that I'm in the long game for life. No matter what happens just remember that you're my Topanga *kisses her forehead*
Topanga: *gets teary at the sight* that was so beautiful! Kiss him Maya! *wipes away her tears as Cory grumbles "no kissing!"*
Josh: *kisses Maya and feels her wrap her arms around his neck*
Maya: *kisses him back*
Riley: I'm so glad she didn't lose hope *smiles at her best friend kissing her future boyfriend*
Cory: *watches joshaya pretty much make out in front of them* hey! Guys! I think that's enough *fake gags*
Joshaya: *pulls apart* sorry guys *blushes*
Topanga: uhm Josh your hand is in her hair *laughs* and Maya you're pretty much sitting on his lap. No actually you're straddling him *smirks*
Maya: *gets off of Josh* whoops *laughs awkwardly* sorry.
Josh: *rubs the back of his neck* so what do you want to do today until your party on the roof tonight?
Cory: as long as it doesn't include kissing like that I'm all for it! *makes a disgusted face*
Maya: can we watch movies and just hang out? *smiles*
Josh: sounds like a plan birthday girl *smiles and helps Topanga clear the table*
