The moment the words "she's on the pill" came out of my mouth, I knew I was in trouble. Nick's expression solidified that fear. He was staring at me like I just shattered a lifelong dream of his. When he said, "what" in a shocked whisper, I mentally kicked myself, for blurting out this information. I had betrayed my daughter's trust. She begged me not to tell her dad & now he knew. Nick wasn't one to let things go when it came to his kids, either, so I was afraid he would say something to her & Mercy would know I broke my promise. What kind of mother was I? Oh yea, the kind that was married to an overbearing & overprotective man who had an unhealthy obsession with keeping his little girl, just that... a little girl.
"Nick... I swear to God if you tell Mercy that I told you..." I said in a warning tone.
"Why is my 12 year old daughter on the pill?" Nick asked in a slow, shaky voice, as he brought his fingers up to his forehead.
"When she got her period, I took her to a gynecologist & she suggested putting her on the pill to regulate her periods & so she would already be on it when she became sexually active." I spoke, slowly, knowing that phrase would do things to Nick's brain. I was right when I saw him close his eyes & put his hands up to his head. "A lot of girls are on the pill when they're young because it helps make their periods less awful. I was on it when I was young. Not twelve but pretty young. It's really not that big of a deal."
Nick's eyes snapped open. "Not that big of a deal? Are you serious? You just gave our daughter permission to have unprotected sex!"
I rolled my eyes & shook my head, knowing this conversation was going to give me a big headache. "Really Nick? Do you really think that's what I did? Do you think I'm such an irresponsible mother that I wouldn't have had a talk with her about it? Her & I went to lunch after her appointment & I explained to her the importance of using condoms when she started to have sex & I also told her how important her virtue was & that she shouldn't give it to just anyone. I had a long conversation about sex & love & waiting & she was forthcoming with questions & feelings about it. It was pretty amazing actually, which is why you can't let her know that I told you."
"Why?" Nick asked, confused by my suggestion.
"She trusts me & I want to keep having that kind of communication with her. I want her to always trust me, to come to me, about sex & boys. If she knows I told you, she won't trust me. She begged me not to tell you because it's so personal to her. She doesn't want her dad to know this kind of stuff. Plus she probably knew you'd freak out."

"Of course I'm freaking out. My baby girl is on the pill & you didn't think you should discuss it with me or even tell me about it." Nick turned & started pacing.
"She's not a baby anymore, Nick. But she is going to have sex one day & isn't it better that she's protected a little & that she feels comfortable talking to one of us about it? If Jerry came to you for condoms, I certainly wouldn't expect you to tell me. She didn't want you to know & I promised her I wouldn't tell you. Please don't say anything to her."
