Chapter 8: What a day
Zach threw another scrunched up piece of paper at the back of Lillie’s head. She bit her lip to stop herself from snapping at him. She knew without looking that he was smirking. Her hands curled up into tight fists as another paper ball hit the back of her head. She looked up from her book to the teacher - a mean, middle-aged woman, called Miss Froden. She had made them read for the entire lesson, just to torture them. She took a deep breath to control her anger as she saw Miss Froden just sitting around, playing games on her phone. The rest of the class was silent.
“Lillie,” Zach hissed.
She didn’t reply, instead, looking down at her book - Alex Rider by Anthony Horowitz. He was hanging off a building, about to fall, about to die!
“Lillie,” he hissed again. And then Lillie was transported back to her boring classroom, being harassed by an arrogant blonde haired boy.
Once again, Lillie didn’t reply, trying to engross herself in Alex’s mission.
“Lillie!” Zach hissed, for the third time.
Finally, she lost all control of herself. She turned around, a clearly annoyed expression on her face and hissed back, “What?”
“What book are you reading?” he asked, smirking. Lillie wanted to wipe the arrogant smile off his face.
“Why do you care?”
“Just because. Then I know never to read it,” Zach said. Robyn, who was sitting next to Lillie, glanced at her and Zach curiously. She looked at Zach’s book and smirked, tilting her head towards him. Lillie frowned slightly at her, trying to decipher what her friend was trying to say. Robyn tilted her head again, still smirking and Lillie looked.
Trying to hide a smile, Lillie answered Zach’s question. “I’m reading Alex Rider.”
“What!” Zach exclaimed. He looked at her book in confirmation. This time, it was Lillie smirking. He held up his book. Both books had purple covers, ‘Stormbreaker’ written in white, the author’s name in yellow. A picture of a sphere, criss-crossed, with a lightning bolt going through it was also in white. He swore under his breath, knowing that his comeback was useless. “How-how can we like the same books?” he asked, dumbfounded.
Lillie shrugged, “It happens sometimes.”
He just glared at her.
---------------
“Hey, Lil,” Harry said, as he walked with her to Maths. “Best period of the day, right?”
Lillie laughed at the sarcasm oozing from his tone, “Yep, totally agree with you there. I mean, numbers and equations, what could be better?”
Harry laughed with her, “I know right.”
“Well, I’m glad to hear that,” said a voice from behind them. Lillie turned around to see her Maths teacher, Mr Zerounian. “It gives us teachers such a great feeling to know that their students enjoy their subject.” The way his eyebrows were raised and the knowing way that Mr Zerounian said that let Lillie know that he knew that she and Harry were being sarcastic.
“Uh, hey, sir,” Harry said, grinning sheepishly. “Glad we can make you feel good.”
Lillie bit her lip to hide her smile, “Yeah, all in a days work.” Mr Zerounian raised an eyebrow at her and she quickly hid a smile.
“Ok, ok, move over, I need to open the classroom door,” he said, taking out his keys. Lillie and Harry nodded and moved aside.
“Hey guys,” Harry said, as he and Lillie sat down at a table with Alyssa and Liam.
