Chapter 4: The first week

The rest of that week passed reasonably smoothly for Lillie. At recess on her first day, she had gone with the rest of her group/gang to see Mr Royce to try out for a few sports. She had signed up for netball, track, football and swimming. The tryouts were at lunch different lunch times that week, so Lillie resolved to start training as soon as possible.

The next most exciting thing of the week was probably music. Because she was part of the music class, Lillie didn’t have to go to the extra information session at lunch on Wednesday. It was in that class that Lillie and her friends were told all the details of the Bello Agmina Competition. Lillie wasn’t sure if she wanted to enter the competition. She knew that Midnight Mayhem, the boys band, were thinking of entering. ‘The boys’ being Will, Liam, Harrison and Zach. She wasn’t quite sure what was stopping them, but she knew that they weren’t that keen on entering either.

Over the course of the week, Lillie had got to know Zach. From what she had gathered from the limited few conversations that she had with him, Lillie thought that Zach was arrogant, cold, unfriendly and a complete player. In turn, Zach thought that Lillie was annoying, too out-spoken and was too quick to judge, although he did acknowledge that she was one of the prettiest girls he had ever seen. The rest of the group watched Lillie and Zach verbally biting each others’ heads off, amused.

On Monday afternoon, Lillie had gone down to the school sports hall with Robyn, Elena, Bianca and Alyssa. The hall was modern, like the rest of the school and the inside was white and bright. The light coloured floorboards were specially made for playing sports on and were coated with a non-slip wax. There were two all-purpose courts, with the markings for netball, tennis, basketball, volleyball and football. As Lillie and Robyn were both trying out for football, they quickly got out the ball and ran through some drills together, flawlessly passing the ball to each other. Both of them were also trying out for netball, along with Elena and Bianca, although Bianca was more focused on getting into the swimming and horse riding teams. She was just trying out for netball for the sake of it.

“I know I’m not going to get in,” she had said, grinning. “It just makes me look a bit more sportier.” Lillie had grinned at the word and thrown the ball to Bianca, who had caught it and thrown it back. Once again, Lillie and Robyn found out that they were both trying out for the exact same sports - netball, football and track.

The football tryouts were on Tuesday, straight after school, so Lillie quickly left Geography and had walked to the sports hall with Liam, who was trying out for the boys football team. At the hall, they met Will, Robyn, Zach, Dan and Harrison, all of whom were trying out. Straight after the football tryouts, were the swimming tryouts, which Lillie, Will, Zach, Dan and Bianca were trying out for. On Wednesday, the netball tryouts were being held. Lillie had been surprised to see Drew there, although Robyn, Elena and Bianca had walked past Drew without surprise. Obviously Drew was a regular for netball. Lillie was even more surprised to see that Drew was reasonably good at netball, maybe even good enough to make the team. Thursday was the one day that Lillie didn’t try out for anything. The two tryouts being held were the rugby and horse riding tryouts. Lillie had gone to watch both, just for fun. Rugby had a small number of people who showed up, although not as many as the other trials. Horse riding trials had a bigger number of people trying out, although it was obvious that rugby and horse riding were not two of the more popular sports. Alyssa, Elena and Bianca tried out for horse riding, while Will watch longingly. He had told Lillie that he loved horse riding and would want to tryout, but he thought that swimming, football and track were more important. Friday was the last day of tryouts, but the teachers had a meeting after school, so the track tryouts were during lunch and tennis was in 5th period, after lunch. Lillie, Robyn, Will and Zach were trying out for track and Alyssa, Liam, Dan and Harrison were trying out for tennis. That night, there had been an email to all the students saying that the results would be sent out on Monday night.
