Chapter 11: The Surprise
“Tonight, I want you to read at least, the first two chapters of Lord of the Rings. We will be studying the first chapter in detail and the second if we have time and if everyone has read it,” Mr Gohanman said. “Class dismissed.” Lillie gathered her things and walked out of her English class with Robyn and Will. Zach was sick, so he was in the Hospital Wing of the school.
“So...Music now,” Will commented. “D’you reckon we’ll have the lesson to work on our song?”
“No idea. Hopefully,” Robyn replied. “How are you going with your song?”
“It’s okay so far. I think we’re thinking of changing it though...” Will trailed off. “How about you?”
“We’re definitely changing it. We just came to a dead end with our other song,” Lillie answered. Robyn nodded.
“We also think that we just need to come up with something a little more upbeat,” she added.
Will sighed, “We have the opposite problem. We came up with something a bit too...’poppy’ for our liking, and we want to write more of a rock song.”
“Good luck,” Lille said, as the reached the music rooms. Will moved to sit with Zach, Dan, Liam and Harrison, while Lille and Robyn sat next to Elena and Bianca. Alyssa still hadn’t arrived.
“Got any ideas for our song?” Elena asked them as they pulled out their books.
Robyn shook her head, but Bianca and Lillie nodded. “You go first,” Lillie said.
“Ok, thanks,” smiled Bianca. “I was thinking we should write a song about life. You know, how it’s all mucked up and stuff. Or, you know, we could do the complete opposite and say that it’s beautiful. I don’t want to do a love song though. Refuse to. Your turn,” she added, looking at Lillie.
“Well, I’ve kinda been obsessed with Coldplay’s new album, so I was thinking about writing a song kind of like A Sky Full of Stars - lots of instrumental and stuff. And I like the idea of about writing about how mucked up life is. Maybe we could use quotes and stuff from famous people and include them.”
“I like that idea,” Robyn said.
Alyssa plopped down in the chair next to Robyn, “What idea?”
“For our song,” Bianca started to answer, but just then, Mrs Watford entered the room.
She put her books and laptop down on the teacher’s desk and issued out instructions, “Afternoon, students. Get in your groups and start working on your songs. For those of you who aren’t entering the Competition, either write your own song, or work on your instrumental pieces for next terms assessment.”
Lillie and her group moved to their usual music room, with Alyssa bringing in her guitar. Elena brought the stave paper and pencils.
“So, what’s the idea?” Alyssa asked.
“We were thinking of writing a song about life with lots of instrumentals,” answered Bianca. “What do you think?”
Alyssa thought for a moment then nodded. “It’s a good idea. Just one question: is it about a good life or a bad one?”
Lillie answered this time. “A mucked up one.” Alyssa grinned.
“I like that.”
Robyn rolled her eyes, “Thought you would.”
Elena sighed. “Can we get started now? We’re wasting precious minutes here.” The other four girls smiled and rolled their eyes, but took Elena’s advice and started to write the lyrics to their song.
