Chapter 12: The lyrics

Lillie walked down the hall, thoughts flooding through her brain, one after another, each one leaving just as quickly. What am I being called for? Lillie thought. It’s not because of that prank we pulled on Drew, is it? The week before, Lillie and Alyssa had had got annoyed at Drew and pulled a series of pranks on her. These pranks included the classic bucket on top of the door, as well as a few new ones, such as setting up a series of alarm clocks next to her bed when Lillie, Robyn and Elena slept over at Alyssa’s dorm. They had also changed her shampoo to bleach, meaning that her hair was now a weird blonde-brown-black colour.

A voice broke Lillie out of her thoughts suddenly, calling to her, “Hey, Lil, what’re you doing out of class?”

Lillie turned around to see Zach leaning on wall of an unused corridor, earphones in ears. His arms were crossed like usual and his tie was hanging loosely from his neck. “Why are you out of class?” she asked, not wanting to voice her worries. She didn’t want him to think that she was expelled.

“I asked you first,” Zach replied, pushing himself off the wall, “but I’ll tell you anyway, because I’m nice.” Lillie scoffed at this. “I just recovered from a life-threatening virus and was released from the hospital wing.”

“‘Life-threatening virus’?” Lillie asked incredulously. “Yeah right, I know you only had the flu.”

“That’s life-threatening,” Zach answered. “People die from it all the time.

Lillie raised an eyebrow, “Yeah, in Africa and third world countries, where people don’t have the right medicine. You were never in any real danger.”

Zach frowned at her, “May I remind you of the swine flu?”

“You didn’t have the swine flu. It’s different from the regular flu.”

“Maybe I did, you never know.” Zach grinned at her, then noticed her bag and folder in her hand. “Where are you going?”

Lillie hesitated, then answered, “I was called to Reception, didn’t you hear the announcement?”

“No, I was listening to music,” he held up his earphones to prove his point.

“Oh. I was called to the office for I don’t know what,” Lillie told Zach. “I think it may be for the pranks on Drew last week. She did threaten to report us.”

“Oh yeah, they were funny, those pranks,” Zach grinned, “Her hairs still bleached. It’s hilarious.”

“I’m glad someone thinks so,” Lillie replied, “I don’t think the teachers find it so funny, though.”

Zach looked at Lillie, straight in the eye. She stared at him back. “C’mon, I’ll walk you to Reception.” Together, they walked to Reception in silence. As soon as they reached Reception, Zach turned to leave, before saying, “Good luck, Lil. You’ll be fine.” He walked off, a confident grin on his face, like he knew she wasn’t going to be in trouble. Lillie knew that wasn’t the case, but smiled back anyway. She walked into Reception and saw her mother sitting in one of the chairs, eyes red and her clothes disheveled. Her mother was always impeccably dressed. Always. Lillie frowned. Obviously, she wasn’t here for pranking Drew.

“What happened, Mum?” she asked.

“Oh, Lillie!” Dianne Amor threw herself at her daughter, tears streaming down her face. “Your father - Tristan - he - he...” Dianne couldn’t go on any more. Lillie looked at the secretary, confusion all over her face. The secretary smiled sadly at Lillie.
