Chapter 3

*Abigail's POV*

"Wait, no. Dad didn't, wouldn't just keep me away from my family like that. Would he?" When no one answered, I asked again, "Would he?"

"I don't know. He got pretty spooked about seeing a Nightmare the last time I saw him." Tooth said. "Maybe he thought that if you took a single step outside the house, Pitch would find you. He changed when Marisa died."

"You knew my mom?"

She nodded. "She was a great woman, very young at heart her whole life. It was sad when I heard from one of my fairies that she'd passed."

A hole appeared in the ground and Bunny and an older man popped out. "Still fun as always." He said with a gleam in his eyes.

"Who're you?" I asked, hoping that he would be able to see me.

"Jamie Bennett. What's your name?"

"Abigail Frost." Shock was written on his face. So this was my grandfather then? Mom's dad?

"Well, Abigail, I don't blame you for not recognizing me and I hope you don't blame me for not recognizing you. The last time I saw you was probably ten years ago."

I shook my head. "Not at all. But, you're human?"

"Proud to be. Though it does get tiring, aging. I wish I could stay the same age forever. Twelve was a good age for me." I smiled. "So, why am I here?"

"Abigail can talk to the tooth fairies." Bunny said. "We figured it might be a human thing, since she's half human."

"I've been able to talk to them for years, I'd wait for Sophie's teeth to fall out when I got rid of all of my baby teeth and stay up to talk to them."

"Me too!" I exclaimed, waking up Sandy.

"Where've you been all these years anyway?"

"Now that is a story that I would be glad to hear." I said, turning around to see Dad.

"I saw the lights. What happened?" He said, ignoring me.

"Oh, nothing." Tooth said. "North just thought we'd want to meet Abigail."

"I thought she was hurt! Don't do that unless something big has happened!" I rolled my eyes as I looked back at the group.

"Uh, well, something did happen." North said uncomfortably.

"Abigail, why don't you go help the yetis?" Dad suggested.

"Glad to." As the Baby Teeth followed me, I smiled. Freedom was freedom, and if I argued it might be taken away.

*Jack's POV*

Abigail walked off, about five Baby Teeth following her. I didn't want her to be involved in any of this, at least not yet.

"What happened?" Bunny asked once she was out of earshot, probably figuring that she was the reason for his discomfort in talking about it.

"Uh..." North whispered in one of his giant ears and he looked shocked.

"Oh, okay. So, you want me to take her to the Warren?"

"What? Is this about Abigail?" I asked, really not liking that they weren't telling me.

"No, no. She's just fine." North waved me off. Jamie chuckled and patted me on the back.

"Uh huh. We're going home now. Abigail!" She sighed and walked over. "We need to go home."

"No! Please don't make me leave! I really don't want to go back yet." She begged.

"Alright. Stay inside the Workshop then. I need to go." She gave me a hug.

"Thanks, Dad!"

*Abigail's POV*

Jamie chuckled as Dad flew out. "He's more protective of you than he was of even Marisa."

I smiled. "So, what's up?"

Bunny leaned toward North and asked him something. "I think so. She's fourteen."

"What?" My eyes narrowed. What'd they talked about in the five minutes I was gone?

"Pitch showed up here earlier, looking for you."

"Pitch Black? Dad was talking about him earlier too. What'd he want me for?"

"We don't know. He asked where you were and left."

"I don't think there's really a reason to worry. Dad keeps such a tight leash on me, I can hardly breathe without him knowing."

"Yet you snuck out for three years. How often was that?" Bunny asked.

"Eh, once a week. And do you know how no one sees me but this one boy?"

Tooth's eyes got wide and Sandy took a step back. "Boy?" North said, like he was shocked I knew him or something.

"Yeah. Every time I go outside, he stands near and watches me. Every time, and he's kinda freaking me out."

"Have you talked to him?" Jamie asked.

"No, I wasn't sure if he was actually watching me or not."

"What does he look like?"

"A lot like you actually. Brown hair, brown eyes. He's always wearing the same thing and he's really pale." They all exchanged glances. "What? Is he involved with Pitch somehow?"

"You need to have Jack tell you that." Tooth said.

"Why don't we just tell her?" Bunny asked. "Kid's bound to find out one way or another."

"Tooth is right." North commented. "It would be better to come from Jack."

I furrowed my eyebrows. What were they talking about? "Do you know him?"

"You could say that."
