My voice started picking up excitement on the name 'Kyran'; he was my best friend and my only friend since we were both in Preparation Kindergarten.

I sprung down the lane, scaled Kyran's fence and flopped through his front door, slapping the door frame with my face in my hurry. Thwack! I stumbled, but did my best to quell the pain.

"Kyran! Kyran! You'll never believe it! I was accepted as an Accountant! I'm going to sign the papers when I get home! I'm so excited! What did you get? Are you going to sign yours? Why aren't you answering me, Kyran!"

I soon realised why he hadn't answered me. He was asleep, face down on top of the covers, his feet on the pillow as usual. I grinned mischievously, and hurled myself on to his bed, bounced up and down while repeating his name in an annoying, "little sister" voice – my pathetic imitation of his sister, Narelle, when she was about three. He just groaned and buried his head between the footboard and the mattress. That could not have been comfortable.

Once I managed to pester him into grunting a sign of life, the sleep quickly vanished from his green eyes as he got as excited about the Graduation as I was.

"You'll be an Accountant! I'll be an Enforcer! I was told three hours ago: I'll start my training immediately after Graduation, and with any luck, become a full-fledged Guard within three years!"

"I start my training three days after graduation: I'll be an accountant within two years!" Everything was coming together. For both of us.
