Chapter 8

Somewhere in the desert just a few miles outside of Dodge Junction, Dusk Shine was lying down on the ground, unconscious as vultures descended from the sky, and gathered around him in a circle to feast on his flesh. Before they had their chance to do so, however, they heard the sound of two ponies screaming at them. One was a pegasai pony with a rainbow colored mane, moderate cerise eyes, and a rainbow bolt with cloud at the end for his cutie mark rainbow colored mane, moderate cerise eyes, and a rainbow bolt with cloud at the end for his cutie mark named Rainbow Blitz, and the other was an earth pony with a poofy brilliant raspberry mane, light cerulean eyes, and two light blue balloons, and one light yellow balloon for his cutie mark named Bubble Berry. They charged at the vultures, and as they shooed them away, Rainbow Blitz said "Get out! Get out! Get outta here! Whoo!" "I love this!" Bubble Berry said. "Bowling for buzzards!" Rainbow Blitz laughed, and said "Gets'em every time!" He laughed again and dusted himself off as Bubble Berry looked at Dusk Shine, and said "Uh oh. Hey, Rainbow! You better come look! I think it's still alive." Rainbow Blitz groaned in disgust as he walked over to Dusk Shine, and said "All right, what have we got here?" He got a closer look at the colt, but when he saw the horn, he gasped, and said "Geez! It's a unicorn! Run, Bubble Berry! Move it!"

"Hey, Rainbow Blitz! It's just a little unicorn!" Bubble Berry said. "Look at him. He's so cute, all alone! Can we keep him?" "Bubble Berry, are you nuts?!" Rainbow Blitz asked. "We're talking about a unicorn! Unicorns mess with ponies like us!" "But he's so little!" Bubble Berry said. "He's gonna get bigger." Rainbow Blitz said. "Maybe he'll be on our side." Bubble Berry said. Rainbow Blitz scoffed, and said "That's the stupidest thing I ever heard. Maybe he'll-." He stopped talking when an idea hit him as he said "Hey, I got it! What if he's on our side? You know, having a unicorn around might not be such a bad idea." "So we're keeping him?" Bubble Berry asked as he placed Dusk Shine on his back. "Of course." Rainbow Blitz said. "Who's the brains in this outfit?" "Uhhhh-." Bubble Berry tried to say, but his words trailed off. "My point exactly. Geez, I'm fried. Let's get out of here, and find some shade." Rainbow Blitz said. They then walked off to the Oasis that they lived in. Once they arrived at the Oasis, Rainbow Blitz gently placed Dusk Shine on the ground, and splashed water from a small lake in his face.

Dusk Shine finally woke up, and Rainbow Blitz said "You okay, colt?" "I guess so." Dusk Shine said. "You nearly died." Bubble Berry said. "I saved you." Rainbow Blitz said. "HEY!" Bubble Berry said feeling offended. "Well, Bubble Berry helped." Rainbow Blitz said as Bubble Berry smiled. "A little." "Thanks for your help." Dusk Shine said in a dull tone as he started to walk away. "Hey, where are you going?" Rainbow Blitz asked. "Nowhere." Dusk Shine said sadly. "Gee, he looks blue." Rainbow Blitz said. "I'd say purple with a hint of moderate sapphire blue, and brilliant rose." Bubble Berry said. "No, no, no, no, Berry. I mean he's depressed." Rainbow Blitz said. "Oh." Bubble Berry said. They went up to Dusk Shine as Bubble Berry said "Hey, colt, what's eating you?" "Nothing! He's at the top of the food chain!" He laughed, and said "The food chain!" Bubble Berry and Dusk Shine just stared at Rainbow Blitz who stopped laughing when he realized that his joke flopped. He cleared his throat, and said "So, where you from?" "Who cares? I can't go back." Dusk Shine said. "Ahh, you're an outcast." Rainbow Blitz said. "That's great! So are we!" "What'cha do, colt?" Bubble Berry asked. "Something terrible." Dusk Shine said. "But I don't wanna talk about it." "Good. We don't wanna hear about it." Rainbow Blitz said. Bubble Berry looked at Rainbow Blitz, and said "Come on, Rainbow." He then looked at Dusk Shine, and said "Anything we can do?"

Dusk Shine shook his head, and said "Not unless you change the past." "You know, colt, in times like this my buddy Rainbow Blitz says 'You got to put your behind in your past.'" Rainbow Blitz shook his head, and said "No, no, no!" "I mean-." Bubble Berry tried to say, but Rainbow Blitz interrupted him, and said "Amateur. Lie down before you hurt yourself." He looked at Dusk Shine, and said "It's you gotta put you your past behind you. Look, colt, bad things happen, and you can't do anything about it, right?" "Right." Dusk Shine said. Rainbow Blitz poked Dusk Shine's nose as he said "Wrong! When the world turns it's back on you, you turn your back on the world." "Well, that's not what I was taught." Dusk Shine said. "Then, maybe, you need a new lesson." Rainbow Blitz said. "Repeat after me. Hakuna matata." Dusk Shine tilted his head in confusion, and said "What?" "Hakuna matata." Bubble Berry said. "It means no worries." "Really?" Dusk Shine asked. "Yeah." Rainbow Blitz said. "Come on. We'll show you what we mean." They went into the Oasis, and as time went by Dusk Shine learned to worry-free, and eat the fruits that grew in their home. In all that time, he went from a little colt to a full-grown stallion.
