...............................................................

Other than the beach party and Dean’s hangover Sunday morning, nothing else really happened that weekend. I unpacked my suitcase, we called Mom, and Dean and I played a few rounds of Call of Duty before the house keeper/cook made us dinner and we had to eat. That evening I found a movie on TV in my room and then fell asleep halfway through, only to wake up Monday morning still fully clothed. When I went down stairs I found the house empty, so I poured myself some cereal and went outside to sit on the porch. The back yard was huge; a big pool with a hot tub on one end and a mini waterfall on the other sat about a yard and a half away from the table and chairs set up. After that there was lush green grass that ran all the way to the fence. To the left of the porch were a stone fire pit and a circle of outdoor wooden chairs. It was peaceful, I had to admit.

After breakfast I went back inside to check my phone. Dean had sent me a message, explaining that he would be back in about an hour. Since he didn’t say where he was going, I decided to call him before taking a shower and getting ready for the day.

“Where’d you go?” I asked when he finally picked up on the fifth ring.

“Travis and I came out early to do some surfing. I just got back to the beach actually. Want me to pick up some breakfast on the way home?”

“I ate cereal, but I could eat more if you wanted to get something. I was just wondering where you were. Do you know when Dad will be home?”

“I called him this morning, he says he should be there around noon.”

“Okay, well I’m going to take a shower. See you later.”

I hung up and dug some clothes out of my suitcase before heading for the bathroom with my toiletries bag in tow. Twenty minutes later I slipped my phone into my back pocket and then headed downstairs.

“Are you back yet?” I asked as I came into the kitchen.

Dean was there, a doughnut hanging out of his mouth and his hair dripping ocean water down the side of his face. He nodded and handed me a cup of coffee, pointing toward the box of doughnuts. I examined them before choosing a chocolate one with sprinkles and taking a bite.

“This is a nutritious breakfast right here.” I said, holding up the doughnut. He nodded solemnly.

“The healthiest. Just don’t let Dad see the box or he’ll kick my butt. He’s been on this weird health kick lately and yells at me whenever I eat fatty foods. But what he doesn’t know won’t hurt him.”

He winked and reached for another doughnut. Laughing, I shook my head and took a long drink of my coffee.

“Do we have plans for today, or just chilling here?”

Dean shrugged. “Dunno, depends on if you want to do something. I’m meeting up with a few buddies later, but that’ll probably be evening some time. You’re welcome to join us if you’d like.”

“I’ll think about it. Maybe Dad will actually want to do something.”

I rolled my eyes and Dean just laughed.

“Good luck with that one. Anyway, I’m going hit the shower. Do you need anything before I go up?”

“No,” I shook my head and took out my phone. “I think I’ll call Jake and see what he and the others have been up to while I wait for Dad to get here.”
