"White or gold?" Magnus asked, waving alternate ribbons in the air. Alec looked up from his work and stared at Magnus but his gaze slid over the warlock. Magnus sighed, this was hopeless.
"Both it is then" He sighed and glided over to the decorations box on the antique table under the window. Alec shook his head, this wasn't how it was meant to happen.
"Magnus" Alec's voice was almost a whisper. The warlock didn't hear or didn't want to hear. "Magnus" Alec raised his voice slightly. Still his fiance was standing, staring out of the window. "Magnus!" Alec shouted, more abruptly than he had meant to. Magnus spun around to face him.
"Alexander Lightwood, did you just shout at me?"
Alec held his head in his hand briefly then refocused.
"Maybe, but I didn't mean to" He sighed, it was hard to keep his eyes open. The past few days had been exhausting. They had been bombarded by swarms of demons, just appearing in the city. He was drowning in a sea of records and reports and all Magnus could think about was wedding colours. Quickly, it dawned on him that he did mean it.
Magnus looked at Alec. For the first time in days he properly looked at him, taking in every detail. This was not the young, confused, insecure boy he remembered from a year ago. His dark hair was getting longer, his eyes had grown dark and tiered. His bones were more harsh under his skin; as though they were trying to push their way through to the surface.
When had they become so disconnected?
He continued down his body, he shoulders were broader, sharper somehow and he looked to be melting into his clothes. The vast amount of paper surrounding him looked to be dragging him down into the floor.
"Enough" Magnus breathed out the word then snapped his fingers. Blue sparks radiated up and then fell down to the floor. In his hand he held his favorite metallic blue trench coat and ornate oak and jade walking cane. He shrugged on his coat with a sullen look towards Alec. Then he turned and made for the door.
Alec lifted his tiered eyes to focus on the silhouette Magnus' made in the dim light of the apartment. Was he leaving? No not again, he wouldn't let him walk away for a second time.
"Magnus, please" Alec spoke in a whisper. Maybe, deep down, he did want the warlock to leave. The sound of light foot steps on the mahogany floor continued to echo through the air "Gold" he sighed "White's for funerals" There he had answered. Magnus stopped and turned slightly.
"You are correct Alexander, white is for funerals" He turned back towards the door and continued to exit the apartment.
The door closed quietly but Alec could hear the sound echo around his head. Anger burst from him and he swiped an arm across the table scattering pages into the air. He watched them flutter to the ground. Tears welled in the back of his throat. Everything was a mess.
